About Holy Cross Lutheran Church

Holy Cross Lutheran Church is a vibrant multigenerational community on the north side of Wheaton, IL. Throughout its history, Holy Cross has placed music ministry as a key foundational block upon which it answers its call to be a worshipping community in the name of Christ. This ministry continues to grow with consistent programming and relationships created both with leaders and youth. This consistency is, in part, the result of staff members who bring forward their talents in creative and joy filled ways in the midst of their work. 

 

About the Role

We are seeking our next Contemporary Worship Music Leader to prayerfully and creatively lead our contemporary worship ministry, inspire and support our Praise Band, and help cultivate a welcoming, joyful, and Christ-centered worship environment for all.

 

The ideal candidate is a collaborative individual with strong communication skills, a heart for ministry, and the ability to build authentic relationships with children, youth, families, volunteers and the broader congregation and community. He/She will work closely with pastors, staff, volunteers, and families in a supportive and creative ministry environment.

 

This is a part time position averaging 10-15 hours per week, including rehearsals, Sunday worship leadership, planning and staff communication.

 

Expectations

  • Team Planning: Serve as part of a team, actively working to foster a collegial, supportive atmosphere with other staff members, volunteers, and the congregation as a whole through creative idea generation, visioning, and problem solving.
  • Support for Holy Cross: Assume a supportive stance toward the congregation, its mission and ethics, its leaders, and its worshiping community.
  • Communication: Communicate regularly with the pastors, other staff, volunteers, and families in those ministry areas to which the position relates.
  • Worship: Participate actively in the worship life of Holy Cross, actively encouraging others to do so as well. 
  • Relationship: Foster positive relationships, in addition to planned activities, with children, youth, and families throughout the Holy Cross community.

 

Core Responsibilities and Duties

  • Lead weekly contemporary worship service vocally and/or instrumentally 
    • Plan worship music for weekly services, which includes music that reflects themes of sermons, reading, church seasons, church values
    • Coordinate with pastors and church leadership on aspects of the weekly services
    • Update weekly projected slides for the worship services in collaboration with the pastors
  • Lead contemporary volunteer musical group/band (Praise Band) in weekly contemporary worship service
    • Recruit, train, and encourage Praise Band team members
    • Regularly rehearse with Praise Band
    • Arrange musical selections to fit skill level of volunteer musicians
    • Regularly communicate schedules, expectations, and music selections to Praise Band team members
    • Maintain a database of digital and/or printed music for Praise Band
    • Foster a welcoming, servant-hearted, fun culture of the Praise Band
  • Pray with and for the worship team (Praise Band and all team members of worship)
  • Work with audio/visual/tech volunteers to ensure smooth services
  • Model spiritual maturity and Christ-centered leadership

 

Qualifications 

  • Demonstrated musical ability instrumentally and/or vocally in an instrument typically used in contemporary worship music (guitar, piano, bass, drums, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of music theory (chord progressions, key signatures, time signatures, etc.)
  • Ability to lead/guide a musical group
  • Ability to lead and encourage congregational participation in worship 
  • Demonstrated ability to organize/effectively communicate with a volunteer team
  • Knowledge of current music and trends in contemporary worship music 
  • Basic knowledge of sound system operation
  • Basic knowledge of slide presentation software

 

Compensation

In compliance with local law, we are disclosing the compensation for roles that will be performed in Illinois. Actual salaries may vary based on various factors, including experience, musical proficiency and availability. Base salary range is expected to be between $15,000-19,000. This position does not include benefits.
