About the Campaign

Sarah Pounds is running for Michigan's 54th House District because she's spent her career fighting for working families, and she wants to keep doing that in Lansing. She's a construction litigation paralegal with 20 years of experience, a co-founder of YIMBY Oakland County, and a mom of four daughters in local public schools. Her dad was an IBEW electrical worker and her mom was a school secretary, and that upbringing shapes how she sees the job: jobs and the economy, public education, attainable housing, and getting money out of politics.

This is a grassroots campaign, and interns are core to how we run it. You'll work directly with the campaign manager and see how a state legislative race comes together from the ground up.

What You'll Do

Interns rotate through or focus on the area that fits their interests and coursework:

  • Field: Canvassing, door-knocking, and voter contact across HD-54's 27 precincts
  • Communications: Drafting social media content, helping with email sends, and supporting press outreach
  • Fundraising: Supporting donor outreach and event logistics
  • Data & Operations: Working in VAN/VoteBuilder for voter data, tracking canvassing progress, and general campaign administration
  • Events: Helping plan and staff campaign events, meet-and-greets, and volunteer trainings

Who We're Looking For

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program (political science, communications, public policy, or related fields preferred, but not required)
  • Interested in grassroots politics, community organizing, or public service
  • Reliable, organized, and comfortable talking to voters
  • No prior campaign experience necessary, we'll train you!

College Credit

We're glad to work with your school to set up this internship for academic credit. We'll provide documentation of hours, a supervisor point of contact, and a letter of recommendation for students who complete the internship in good standing. Let us know your program's requirements when you apply and we'll coordinate directly with your internship coordinator or advisor.

Why Intern With Us

You'll get real, hands-on experience in every part of a competitive state legislative campaign, mentorship from experienced campaign staff, and a front-row seat to how local elections are won. Many of our past volunteers and interns have gone on to paid campaign and political jobs.
