Position Overview
iCode is seeking an enthusiastic and dependable VEX IQ Robotics Coach and STEM Instructor to lead students through hands-on robotics, coding, engineering, and technology programs.
This role combines competition-team coaching with classroom instruction. The ideal candidate enjoys working with children, understands how to make technical concepts approachable, and can create a structured environment where students learn to collaborate, solve problems, and take ownership of their work.
As a VEX IQ Robotics Coach, you will guide student teams through the engineering design process as they design, build, program, test, and improve competition robots. As an iCode Instructor, you will lead engaging, project-based classes using iCode’s provided curriculum, lesson plans, presentations, instructor guides, and classroom materials.
Key Responsibilities
- VEX IQ Competition Coaching
- Coach one or more VEX IQ Competition teams throughout the robotics season.
- Help students understand the current VEX IQ game, competition rules, scoring system, and tournament structure.
- Guide students in designing, building, testing, and improving VEX IQ robots.
- Teach students to program robots using VEXcode IQ.
- Support both driver-controlled and autonomous robot development.
- Guide students in maintaining an organized engineering notebook.
- Prepare students for teamwork challenges, robot skills matches, interviews, judging, and presentations.
- Run structured team meetings with clear objectives, assignments, and progress checks.
- Encourage students to take ownership of their robot rather than building or programming it for them.
- Promote teamwork, communication, leadership, accountability, resilience, and good sportsmanship.
- Communicate team progress, expectations, schedules, and competition information to iCode leadership and parents.
- Attend local competitions, scrimmages, practices, and special robotics events as assigned.
- Organize, maintain, and safely store VEX IQ kits, tools, batteries, competition fields, and related materials.
iCode Classroom Instruction
- Lead instructor-guided lessons in robotics, coding, engineering, game development, and other STEAM subjects.
- Prepare for each class by reviewing the provided lesson plan, instructor guide, presentation, software, and required materials.
- Deliver lessons using iCode’s project-based and hands-on teaching approach.
- Guide students through both instructional activities and applied lab projects.
- Adapt explanations and support based on each student’s age, experience, and learning needs.
- Encourage students to experiment, troubleshoot, collaborate, and learn through iteration.
- Maintain an engaging, organized, and safe classroom environment.
- Monitor student progress and provide constructive, age-appropriate feedback.
- Help students complete projects while ensuring that the students remain the primary creators.
- Provide updates and personalized feedback for parents when requested.
- Support camps, trial classes, open houses, school partnerships, and other iCode programs as needed.
- Set up and reset classrooms, computers, robotics equipment, and supplies before and after instruction.
- Follow all iCode operational, student-safety, classroom-management, and technology-use procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Experience working with children in a classroom, camp, tutoring, coaching, mentoring, or youth-program environment.
- Foundational knowledge of robotics, programming, engineering, computer science, or a related technical field.
- Strong communication, organization, and classroom-management skills.
- Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to students with different experience levels.
- Patient, encouraging, dependable, and comfortable giving students both support and accountability.
- Ability to learn new software, hardware, curriculum, and competition rules.
- Willingness to complete iCode training and prepare before each class or team practice.
- Availability during scheduled classes, practices, and assigned competition dates.
- Ability to pass all required background checks.
- Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with VEX IQ, VEXcode IQ, VEX Robotics Competition, or another educational robotics platform.
- Experience coaching robotics teams or participating in robotics competitions.
- Experience with block-based or text-based programming.
- Familiarity with engineering notebooks and the engineering design process.
- College coursework or a degree in computer science, engineering, education, robotics, mathematics, or a related field.
- Experience teaching students between approximately 8 and 14 years old.
- Knowledge of additional technologies such as Scratch, Python, Lua, Arduino, 3D modeling, 3D printing, Minecraft Education, or Roblox Studio.
- Experience communicating with parents about student progress.
