Landscape Gardener
Job Summary
Join our dynamic team as a full-time Landscape Gardener and bring outdoor spaces to life with vibrant plantings, meticulous maintenance, and innovative landscaping solutions. In this role, you will be responsible for creating and maintaining beautiful gardens, grounds, and landscapes that inspire and delight with a great employee team & trained volunteers. Your expertise in horticulture, plant identification, irrigation systems, and landscape maintenance will help transform outdoor environments into thriving spaces. This paid position offers an exciting opportunity to work outdoors, develop your gardening skills, and contribute to aesthetically pleasing and eco-friendly landscapes. This position offers the right candidate flexible days Monday-Friday, flexible arrival and departure times (7:30am -2:30pm or 8am-3pm) and half-day paid Fridays in August (paid time hours must be approved in annual budget).
This is a excellent full-time Landscape Gardener opportunity. Duties (see full job description on website)
- Follow proper Horticulture Garden planting techniques, watering, fertilizing, and mulching; selecting, planting and pruning of flowers, shrubs, hedges, and trees; Removal of invasive plant material and dead plant material; Turf maintenance including trimming, mowing, pest control, fertilizing to ensure healthy growth and visual appeal
- Oversee the operation, inventory, and maintenance of assigned landscape tools, equipment, and machinery safely and efficiently.
- Provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situations within selected landscape and garden areas.
- Supervise and direct Landscape Garden Volunteers in their varied gardening tasks.
- Ensure that all property signs and garden interpretation are well maintained and unobstructed.
- Assist in emergency storm preparations and recovery, as required.
- Develop knowledge of the site and its history by attending enhancement programs and reviewing the site landscape plans and horticulture documents.
- If required, assist with special events and programming as needed, including arriving early and staying late to open/close the site, some evenings, weekends, or holidays might be required.
- Work as a cooperative member of a team, show good attendance at work and be willing to lead, follow, and support colleagues in a tactful, positive way.
Experience
- Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture or related preferred with 1-year applied work experience. Student interns with experience considered. May substitute applicable experience for education.
- Microsoft Office skills preferred.
- Horticulture-based student Internship and/or Research Assistant involvement considered.
- Applied knowledge of Landscape/Garden Design, Integrated Pest Management, Nuisance Wildlife Control
- South Carolina Herbicide and Pesticide certification highly desired; familiarity with pesticide management and strategies to promote sustainability.
- Demonstrated ability to operate and maintain landscape equipment including tractors, commercial mowers, chainsaws, trimmers, woodchippers, and other power equipment.
- Possess a valid SC Driver’s License along with a safe driving record.
- Ensure all work is performed in a safe manner; also demonstrate an understanding of instructions and deadlines yet take initiative and work independently. Experience in landscape maintenance or gardening roles with a strong understanding of horticulture principles
- Knowledge of plant identification, native plants, soil preparation, and sustainable gardening practices preferred.
- Experience working outdoors in various weather conditions with climbing skills for elevated work areas
- Background in farming or agriculture is advantageous for understanding growing cycles and soil health management.
