Resident Guide | Starting salary $70,000

The best way to learn how to do something is to do it.

That’s the idea behind the Forge Guide Residency. Each year, we select a small cohort of Resident Guides for an 18–24 month path to becoming a Forge Guide. Our inaugural cohort will include just three Residents.

You don’t need ten years of teaching experience. You don’t need to have mastered the Forge model.

You do need to be curious, intellectually ambitious, enthusiastic, great with young people, and eager to get better fast.

As a Resident Guide, you’ll work alongside experienced Forge Guides while doing the real work from day one.

Sometimes you’ll observe. Sometimes you’ll co-lead. And sometimes you’ll get thrown into the deep end.

That’s the point.

The Reality

Forge doesn’t organize learning into traditional subjects and 45-minute periods.

Our students learn by tackling ambitious, cross-disciplinary challenges: launching companies, conducting original research, building products, investigating real problems, and presenting their work to people beyond the school.

Your job is to help them succeed.

On any given week, you might:

• Teach physics while helping students attempt a Guinness World Record
• Coach a team on crafting the narrative for a public health campaign about a rare disease
• Help a student learn algebra by building a financial model for a local business
• Teach the science students need to formulate and test a new product
• Lead a seminar on something you knew very little about two weeks earlier

You won’t know how to do all of this when you arrive.

We don’t expect you to.

We expect you to learn.

What This Actually Looks Like

You teach from day one. This isn’t an 18-month observation program. You’ll watch experienced Guides, co-lead with them, and work directly with students yourself. As you demonstrate mastery, you’ll take on more.

You don’t teach a subject. You coach humans. You may love history, physics, writing, or economics. Great. At Forge, those disciplines come together. You’ll learn to recognize the math, science, writing, history, and other knowledge embedded in the problems students are solving and help them acquire it when they need it.

You get coached. A lot. Great Guides aren’t born knowing how to do this. You’ll receive frequent observation, feedback, practice, and coaching from experienced educators and practitioners.

You become comfortable not knowing. Students will ask questions you can’t answer. Projects will go sideways. Plans will change. Your response can’t be to reach for the teacher’s edition. You’ll investigate, adapt, and figure things out alongside students.

You gradually own more. The goal isn’t to spend two years as a Resident Guide. It’s to become a great Guide. How quickly you progress depends on how quickly you demonstrate that you’re ready for greater responsibility.

You Should Apply If

• You’re early in your career and your rate of learning is more impressive than your résumé
• You’re intensely curious and enjoy learning things outside your area of expertise
• You’re unusually good with 10–13-year-olds and hold them to high expectations
• You’ve built, led, organized, created, or started something
• You can explain complicated ideas simply
• You’re comfortable receiving frequent, specific feedback
• You’re willing to figure things out rather than wait for someone to tell you what to do
• You believe young people are capable of far more than we typically ask of them
• You want responsibility earlier than most organizations are willing to give it to you

You Shouldn’t Apply If

• You’re looking for a traditional teacher-training program
• You want to teach only one subject
• You need a detailed curriculum telling you exactly what to do each day
• You’re uncomfortable being observed, coached, and challenged
• You think your job is to prevent students from struggling or failing
• You need to know the answer before you’re comfortable getting started
• You want to spend 18 months watching before being given real responsibility

The Residency

The Forge Guide Residency is an 18–24 month development path toward becoming a full Forge Guide.

You’ll learn how to:

• Coach students through ambitious, cross-disciplinary challenges
• Identify and teach the academic knowledge embedded in real-world work
• Give direct instruction when students need it and step back when they don’t
• Build strong relationships while maintaining high expectations
• Diagnose where a student is struggling and intervene effectively
• Help students develop independence rather than dependence on adults
• Assess and document genuine mastery
• Design learning experiences that students remember

There’s no automatic promotion at month 18. You become a Guide when you demonstrate that you can do the job at the level our students deserve.

Maybe you’re:

• A teacher in the first few years of your career who suspects there’s a better way to do school
• A recent graduate who would have considered teaching if traditional schools looked different
• A coach, tutor, camp counselor, or youth-program leader who discovered you’re unusually good at helping kids grow
• An engineer, scientist, writer, designer, or builder who loves working with young people
• Someone from a startup or other high-agency environment who wants your work to matter
• Someone whose background we haven’t thought of yet

We care less about where you learned than how quickly you learn.
