Overview of Blackstone Valley Automation (bvautomation.com)

Blackstone Valley Automation (BVA) is a small fully equipped automation design house and machine shop. We engage in process development, process optimization and automated manufacturing, and test machine design for clients primarily in the medical device field. Every project presents itself with a unique process challenge and the added rigor that comes with producing equipment for the medical device industry. There are typically 5+ ongoing projects that range from fully automated assembly systems to proof of concept control systems for highly complex processes. Our recent projects include:

  • Fully automated 10-axis of motion small diameter, long length pin distribution, gluing, curing, and inspection machine.
  • State of the art 6-axis textile implant winding machine.
  • High accuracy extruded filter fiber porosity quality control test equipment.
  • High throughput automated bulk towel folding machine.

The automation design team at BVA moves fast. We are looking for a talented and ambitious co-op mechanical engineer and/or electrical engineer with manufacturing automation/controls experience to join a team of 8 full time and part-time mechanical, controls, and electrical engineers.

Position Overview

Co-ops may work in a team environment alongside other mechanical and controls engineers to complete large projects, while also have the possibility of owning an automation design project from concept development through detailed design to manufacture and install. Our projects typically take from 3-6 months to complete, and in addition to the ongoing projects, there are a few projects scheduled to kick off in soon that would need a technical contributor on the mechanical and controls side. A co-op would be able to jump into the team on day 1, participate in the development and balance the needs of multiple ongoing projects. BVA co-ops will gain a broad range of exposure and work experiences in engineering development and manufacturing areas that range from precision laser welding to robotic systems. Responsibilities will include hands on process development, design, assembly, testing, and debug. Skills in assembly, fabrication, and documentation are desirable. Individuals must be hardworking self-starters who can work both independently and in a team environment.

Key Functions

  • Act as a full time engineer on a small, fast-paced interdisciplinary manufacturing automation design team.
  • Mechanical engineer: Be responsible for all aspects of mechanical design for automated material handling/processing equipment with the option of expanding scope to electrical, pneumatic and fluidic design/specification.
  • Independently come up with system designs and present internally and to clients for review. After concept approval the design should be fully detailed, drawings made and manufacturing overseen.
  • Electrical or Controls engineer: Be responsible for all aspects of control and electrical design for automated material handling/processing equipment with the option of expanding scope to mechanical, pneumatic and fluidic design/specification.
  • Aid technicians with prototyping, assembling, and commissioning of large integrated robotic platforms.

Qualities Desired Across Disciplines

  • History of successful unique approaches to solving complex problems.
  • Ability to dive deep into new processes to become a technical expert on the subject matter.
  • GPA above 3.0, however, lower may be accepted with a strong technical background.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • SolidWorks CAD experience (a must for mechanical candidates, a plus for EE/controls)
  • Relevant experience in process engineering.
  • Experience with DFA/DFM best practices.
  • Understanding of GD&T principles.
  • Familiarity with a broad range of manufacturing methods and practices.
  • Exposure to PLCs in manufacturing settings (a must for EE/controls candidates, a plus for mechanical)
  • Must be able to work independently, stay organized, communicate with end users, communicate with vendors, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Machine shop experience.

The equipment list includes Trak and Hardinge CNC lathes, Haas and Prototrak CNC VMC's, wire EDM, FDM 3D printer, and many more (pending individuals' ability to safely use equipment)
