Spanish Teacher (Grades 6–8)

2026–2027 School Year

OWNCS 1 Middle School, located in Long Island City, Queens, is committed to providing students with a first-class learning experience that maximizes their intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development. We aim to cultivate students’ ability to apply their knowledge to solve problems and contribute to their communities as enlightened and responsible citizens.

OWN Charter Schools (OWNCS) seeks a passionate and collaborative Spanish Teacher for the 2026–2027 school year. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) school, we are seeking an educator who is committed to delivering engaging, inquiry-based world language instruction that fosters communication skills, cultural awareness, and global citizenship for students in grades 6–8.

The ideal candidate will design and facilitate developmentally appropriate Spanish language learning experiences aligned with the IB MYP framework while creating a supportive and engaging classroom environment that promotes curiosity, confidence, and appreciation for diverse cultures and perspectives.

Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction and Curriculum

  • Demonstrate commitment to the mission, vision, goals, and values of OWN Charter Schools
  • Deliver rigorous, standards-aligned Spanish language instruction using communicative, inquiry-based, and student-centered teaching practices
  • Design and implement engaging lessons and units aligned with the IB MYP framework, including Global Contexts and Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills
  • Teach core Spanish language skills, including:
    • Listening comprehension
    • Speaking and conversational communication
    • Reading comprehension
    • Writing and grammar development
    • Vocabulary acquisition and pronunciation
    • Cultural studies and global awareness
  • Foster students’ confidence and proficiency in using Spanish for authentic communication and real-world applications
  • Integrate cultural exploration and interdisciplinary connections to deepen students’ understanding of Spanish-speaking communities and cultures
  • Use technology and interactive instructional resources to enhance language learning and student engagement

Student Learning and Support

  • Set and maintain high expectations for student achievement and classroom behavior
  • Use a variety of assessments and student data to monitor progress and inform instruction
  • Differentiate instruction to support diverse learning needs and language proficiency levels
  • Provide targeted support and enrichment opportunities to promote student growth and confidence in language acquisition
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative classroom environment that encourages participation, risk-taking, and communication

Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with colleagues, instructional leaders, and support staff to strengthen curriculum, instruction, and student outcomes
  • Participate in curriculum planning, interdisciplinary projects, and school-wide initiatives
  • Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, classroom expectations, and language development
  • Maintain accurate records related to attendance, grading, assessments, and student performance
  • Participate in professional development aligned with IB practices, world language instruction, and organizational goals
  • Support the school community through advisory, enrichment opportunities, clubs, cultural events, or other school activities as assigned
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by school leadership

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Spanish, Education, World Languages, or related field required
  • New York State teaching certification in Spanish or World Languages preferred
  • Fluency in Spanish required
  • Experience teaching middle school students preferred
  • Familiarity with International Baccalaureate (IB) programs preferred
  • Strong knowledge of language acquisition strategies, instructional practices, and assessment methods
  • Ability to create engaging and inclusive learning environments for diverse learners
  • Strong classroom management, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Commitment to educational equity, inquiry-based learning, and continuous professional growth
