Developmental Editor

Title: Developmental Editor

Type of Employment: Non-Exempt, Full-Time or Part-Time

Reports to: Editorial Director

Date: July 2026

Salary Range:  $20-$30/hour

 

Essential job functions:

  • Devoted to Jesus Christ as a Born-Again Christian, who fully supports the DeepRoots Statement of Faith and performs in such a way as to fulfill the ministry mission statement
  • Participates in a local Christian church as a member in good standing
  • Displays spiritual maturity, academic ability, and personal leadership qualities that reflect Christ and His character.Possesses a deep and thorough knowledge of the Bible and a commitment to relying upon the Holy Spirit for wisdom and power
  • Committed to the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18–20) according to Christ’s command and refuses to cooperate with false gospels.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Job duties:

  • Research theological, philosophical, and cultural topics to develop accurate and engaging curriculum content
  • Write and revise lessons, active engagements, and supplemental materials for students and teachers
  • Translate complex concepts into content that is clear, engaging, age-appropriate, and applicable for young learners
  • Collaborate with editors, production teams, and subject matter experts to complete projects
  • Incorporate feedback through multiple rounds of revision while maintaining quality and consistency
  • Meet project deadlines while managing multiple assignments simultaneously
  • Contribute creative ideas for new curriculum resources and instructional approaches
  • Assist with general editing and copyediting throughout the curriculum development process, as assigned
  • Assist with other editorial and administrative tasks as needed

Education and experience requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Bible, Education, Theology, or related field

Required Qualifications:

Excellent writing, editing, and research skills

  • Excellent grammar, proofreading, and copyediting skills
  • Strong understanding of Scripture and Christian theology
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas in an engaging, age-appropriate manner
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to format documents accurately and maintain consistency across multiple resources

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching or classroom experience
  • Experience writing curriculum, education materials, or Bible studies
  • Experience copyediting educational, curriculum, or publishing materials
  • Familiarity with editorial style guides and publishing workflows
  • Experience working in a collaborative editorial or publishing environment

Technology requirements:

  • Familiar with Google Workspace

Physical requirements:

  • The ability to remain in a seated or stationary position for a significant portion of the workday
  • The ability to see details at close range and to hear and speak clearly to communicate with colleagues and clients

Working conditions:

  • Works remotely from home
  • Must be able to multitask
  • May be required to work overtime
  • Employees who are required to drive for company business must have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and an acceptable driving record. If an incident/accident does occur, insurance claims are to be directed to the employee’s primary vehicle insurance. Mileage reimbursement is provided.
