Graduate Research Assistant
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Dr. Lambert’s research program examines the integration of artificial intelligence and digital health technologies into healthcare systems from a sociotechnical perspective — how technology, people, organizations, and policy interact to shape adoption, implementation, and outcomes. Current and upcoming projects span:
· Barriers to digital health technology (DHT) adoption among older adults
· LLM-assisted thematic analysis of patient portals
· AI literacy and workforce readiness in health information management (global survey/Delphi methodology)
· International, comparative digital health education and implementation science research (France-based collaboration)
The Graduate Research Assistant will work directly with Dr. Lambert across these projects, contributing to literature synthesis, qualitative and quantitative data collection/analysis, AI/ML-assisted research tooling, manuscript development, and international research collaboration. This is a hands-on training role intended to build the GRA’s methodological and technical research skill set toward a research-oriented career in health informatics, health administration, healthcare services research, implementation science, or a related field.
This position does not require prior expertise in health informatics or health information management. We welcome applicants from Health Informatics, Health Administration, Computer Science, Health Information Science, Public Health, Information Systems, Data Science, Psychology, or related graduate programs, provided they bring genuine interest in healthcare/health informatics and a foundation in (or strong aptitude for) research methodology.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research Design & Data Collection
- Conduct systematic and scoping literature reviews
- Support IRB protocol development, amendments, and human subjects compliance documentation
- Assist with participant recruitment, interview scheduling, and data collection for qualitative studies
- Support survey design, deployment, and management (e.g., Qualtrics)
Data Analysis & AI/ML Support
- Perform qualitative coding and thematic analysis (manual and LLM-assisted)
- Manage, clean, and analyze large-scale/administrative datasets
- Assist with development, testing, and validation of machine learning models and LLM-based tools applied to health information tasks
- Produce data visualizations and analytic summaries for manuscripts and presentations
Scholarly Output
- Co-author peer-reviewed manuscripts for health informatics, health administration, implementation science, and organizational behavior journals
- Support manuscript preparation, citation management, and figure/table development
- Assist with conference abstract, poster, and presentation development
Research Infrastructure
- Build and maintain codebooks, data dictionaries, and version-controlled research repositories
- Document reusable research protocols and methods for ongoing/future studies
- Support reproducibility practices (well-documented code, transparent analytic pipelines)
International & Collaborative Research
- Contribute to cross-national comparative research (digital health education) in collaboration with international partners
- Participate in a funded research trip to support data collection and collaborative work abroad (France) for a few of weeks.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Currently enrolled (or admitted for the relevant term) in a graduate program at Texas State University — open to HIIM, Health Administration, Computer Science, Health Information Science, Public Health, Data/Information Science, or closely related fields
- Coursework and/or applied experience in research methodology — qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods (e.g., a methods course, thesis/capstone research, prior RA)
- Genuine interest in healthcare, health informatics, and health information management as application domains
- Interest in one or more of: digital health, implementation science, AI/ML in healthcare, higher education/workforce research
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple concurrent tasks, and meet deadlines
- Comfort learning and working with AI-assisted research/coding tools
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prior experience with qualitative data analysis software or a demonstrated ability to learn one quickly
- Programming/data analysis experience in Python
- Experience with survey platforms (e.g., Qualtrics) or statistical software (SPSS, STATA)
- Exposure to machine learning, NLP, or large language model applications
- Prior human subjects research experience (IRB protocols, recruitment, informed consent)
- Interest or coursework in implementation science, digital health literacy, technology acceptance frameworks, or social determinants of health
- Interest in international/comparative research or prior study-abroad/global health experience
- Prior peer-reviewed publication or conference presentation experience (as author or co-author)
