About Discovery Club
Discovery Club is Boys & Girls Clubs of MetroWest's EEC-licensed school-age childcare program for children in grades K-5. Located in Marlborough Public Schools, the program offers before-school, after-school, school vacation, and summer care in a safe and inclusive environment. Children build friendships, explore new interests, and participate in hands-on enrichment, recreation, and free-choice activities.
Position Summary
Group Leaders provide direct supervision and lead engaging activities for children before and after school. The ideal candidate is dependable, caring, energetic, and comfortable taking initiative while maintaining clear expectations and a welcoming program environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide active, attentive supervision and ensure children remain accounted for during activities and transitions.
- Maintain required staff-to-child ratios and follow all safety, dismissal, and emergency procedures.
- Plan and lead age-appropriate activities such as arts and crafts, STEM, games, sports, sensory activities, and outdoor play.
- Support daily routines, including arrival, snack, free choice, structured activities, transitions, and dismissal.
- Build positive relationships with children and help create an environment where every child feels safe, included, and respected.
- Use positive, developmentally appropriate behavior-management strategies and reinforce safe, respectful, and responsible behavior.
- Work collaboratively with site staff, follow assigned responsibilities, and communicate concerns or important information promptly.
- Respond appropriately to injuries, challenging behaviors, emergencies, and unexpected program situations.
- Assist with setup, cleanup, organization, and care of program supplies and spaces.
- Complete required attendance, incident, injury, and other program documentation accurately and on time.
- Maintain professional communication with children, guardians, school personnel, coworkers, and program leadership.
- Attend required meetings and training and follow EEC, school, Discovery Club, and Boys & Girls Clubs of MetroWest policies.
Minimum EEC Qualifications
Candidates must be at least 18 years old and meet at least one of the following Massachusetts EEC qualification pathways for a school-age Group Leader:
- A bachelor's or associate's degree and at least three months of experience working with school-age children;
- A high school diploma or equivalent and at least six months of experience working with school-age children; or
- At least nine months of experience working with school-age children.
Additional Qualifications
- Experience in childcare, camp, recreation, education, coaching, or youth development is preferred.
- Ability to lead activities and manage groups of children with patience, confidence, and consistency.
- Strong communication, teamwork, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Reliable attendance and the ability to arrive on time and work the entirety of assigned shifts.
- Willingness to complete required background checks, EEC training, CPR, First Aid, and other professional development.
Schedule
- Before-school shifts are generally between 7:00am and 9:00am, Monday-Friday.
- After-school shifts are generally between 2:30pm and 6:00pm, Monday-Friday.
- Additional hours may be available during school vacations, professional development days, early release days, and summer programming.
Candidates do not need to be available for every shift or every day. Partial availability is welcome, and schedules are developed based on candidate availability and program needs.
