Description:
The Business Services Manager (BSM) is an essential position to SBIDC’s mission, focused on connecting small- and medium-sized industrial and manufacturing businesses to the resources and support they need to thrive in Southwest Brooklyn. The BSM serves as a primary advisor to local industrial and manufacturing businesses—providing one-on-one counseling, connecting them to
financing and incentives, and troubleshooting government issues.
The BSM will play the lead role in managing SBIDC's Industrial Business Service Provider contract with the NYC Department of Small Business Services while working closely with the Senior Director of Green Economy Programs to ensure industrial businesses are connected to emerging opportunities in the
green economy. This includes participating in cross-program initiatives, industry events, and employer engagement activities that support SBIDC programs such as We Source and other sector-based initiatives serving industrial businesses.
The position is from 9:00am-5:00pm from Monday – Friday, with occasional nights and weekends. The position requires 3 in-person days at our Sunset Park office and offers 2 remote days weekly.
Scope of Work:
Business Services and Program Delivery
• Provide one-on-one advising and technical assistance to small businesses across financing, tax incentives, navigating government, real estate, and other issues as they arise, serving as their primary point of contact and trusted counselor.
• Manage SBIDC’s contract with the NYC SBS and regularly attend funder meetings.
• Manage internal and external reporting, ensuring data accuracy.
• Develop and maintain an internal case pipeline with clear follow-up and track outcomes.
• Connect industrial businesses with green economy initiatives, including supplier development, procurement, workforce, and industry partnership opportunities.
• Assist with planning, outreach, and execution of SBIDC business workshops, networking events,
and industry convenings.
• Collaborate with colleagues to cross-refer businesses for hiring, training, and other opportunities.
Research and Advocacy
• Inform businesses about relevant public policies through SBIDC communications channels. Share insights gathered from client cases to inform advocacy strategies.
• Contribute data and case studies for grant reporting and communications.
• Conduct outreach to document business demographics and local market trends to inform advocacy efforts and program offerings.
• Draft advocacy and research memos as needed and represent SBIDC at key hearings and coalition meetings.
Qualifications:
• A motivation and commitment to help small businesses
• Interest in manufacturing, infrastructure, offshore wind, building decarbonization, or other emerging green economy sectors
• A minimum of 2 years’ work experience in business services, economic development, program administration, and/or a related field
• Demonstrated experience in outreach techniques and event planning
• Familiarity with CRM systems (Microsoft Dynamics, Salesforce, etc.) and translating data into program insights.
• An alignment with SBIDC’s equitable economic development and planning goals
• Excellent writing and research skills
• Ability to balance multiple priorities, adapt to evolving team roles, and lead new projects independently
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Strong digital skills, including Microsoft Suite and project management tools
• Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin or Cantonese a plus
• Willingness and curiosity to learn on the job
Compensation:
The salary range for this position is $70,000 to $80,000. The compensation package includes benefits, generous PTO and retirement matching funds.
