TheWaterReplenishmentDistrictofSouthernCalifornia(WRDorDistrict) is a California Special District responsible for managing and protecting local groundwater resources for over 4 million residents. As a local government agency, WRD ensures that a reliable supply of high-quality groundwater is available through the use of stormwater capture and recycled water. 

WRD isseekingamotivated intern for its Hydrogeology Department.  Under supervision, theinternwillhave the opportunitytogainreal-worldexperience collecting data in the field, preparing tables/graphs in the office for various compliance related reports, and supporting other various projects and programs overseen by the Hydrogeology Department.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

This multifaceted position will include a wide variety of activities across various disciplines including geology, chemistry, environmental, water resources, and hydrogeology.  The intern will have an opportunity to work with seasoned professionals with experience in both the public and private sectors and will also have access to registered professional geologists (PG) and certified hydrogeologists (CHg). The ideal candidate must be enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited college or university and be pursuing a bachelor's or graduate degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, or a closely related field. Candidates must be available to work 12 to 24 hours per week.

Assignments may include, but are not limited to:

  • Pre-field planning for field events requiring a high degree of organization and coordination with other hydrogeologists in the Hydrogeology Department.
  • Working in the field measuring water levels, collecting data from and maintaining pressure transducers, collecting groundwater samples, etc.
  • Post-field data reduction and generating tables / graphs for various compliance related reports prepared by the District.  
  • Other office related duties may include data analysis, project filing, detail checking reports, environmental site reviews, etc.

Qualifications :

 

Candidates must have Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Familiarity with data analysis and visualization tools, such as ArcGIS, is desirable but not required. This position requires flexibility to work in a variety of settings, including both office and outdoor environments, as assigned by the District.

  1. Must be currently in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited college or university or be a recent college graduate (within 6 months) with a degree in or a closely related to the field of the internship
  2. Successful completion of a physical and a background check
  3. Must provide a copy of current college transcript

Duration

  1. Each internship is for one 12-month period.  
  2. The work schedule for interns is intended to be part-time, but extended work schedules may be allowed during school breaks or as the student’s schedule permits.
  3. Flexible, part-time (10 to 24 hours per week) schedule coordinated to work with school schedules but will not exceed more than 990 hours in the fiscal year (July 1 through June 30).

COMPENSATION: $25.87 per hour for undergraduate students and $28.45 per hour for graduate students

For purposes of employment, interns are considered temporary employees and are not eligible for any benefits unless required by law.
