General Studies Teacher Assistant

First–Third Grade Girls' Program · YRSRH / Breuer's
Partnering with Lead General Studies Teacher Mrs. Sarah Auerbach

Position Summary

We are seeking a capable, child-centered teacher to partner with our lead general studies teacher in a mixed-age (first through third grade) girls' classroom.

This is a professional teaching role, not an aide position: the co-teacher independently delivers instruction to small groups, owns defined subject areas, and shares responsibility for the daily flow of the classroom.

Montessori experience is welcome but not required—training on the materials and work cycle will be provided. What is essential is a competent, warm educator who can lead instruction clearly, plan collaboratively, and respond skillfully to individual children's needs.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction

  • Independently teach small groups—deliver clear, well-prepared lessons to groups of a few girls at a time (e.g., a math group of approximately 5 while the lead teaches the remaining girls), enabling simultaneous instruction across the classroom.
  • Lead reading groups—take ownership of one or more reading groups within a grade level, running them independently.
  • Own defined subject areas—take full responsibility for assigned subjects (for example, third-grade math taught in a traditional manner): teaching, grading, homework, and being the lead on parent communication for that subject, with the lead teacher available to support parent meetings as needed.
  • Support small-group and individual math and literacy instruction (second- and third-grade math, reading, spelling), so the girls receive the individualized attention the model depends on.

Classroom Flow & Work Cycle

  • Tone-keep the work cycle—hold the room and take children's questions while the lead teacher gives small-group lessons or conducts observations, and vice versa.
  • Respond to individual children—recognize when a child is lost, distracted, or having an emotional moment, and help successfully reintegrate her into the group.
  • Support work-cycle protocols—handling of materials, transitions, and classroom routines (training provided).

Planning & Collaboration

  • Plan collaboratively with the lead teacher on a consistent, committed basis (weekly), in addition to individual preparation.
  • Participate in whole-staff planning and coordinate on curriculum, individual student needs, and weekly flow.
  • Complete a pre-year onboarding meeting with the lead teacher and administration to review responsibilities before the school year begins.

Required Qualifications

  • A competent, experienced teacher able to lead instruction clearly and independently—not an entry-level aide.
  • Ability to teach and grade elementary math and lead reading/literacy groups.
  • Strong classroom insight—able to read the room, notice a struggling or distracted child, and know how to respond and reintegrate her.
  • Reliable commitment to weekly collaborative planning (in school and/or before/after hours as arranged).
  • Warm, child-centered, and receptive to learning new methods.
  • Available to start by August 15—before the school year, to allow onboarding and joint planning.

Preferred (Not Required)

  • Montessori exposure or training. Not required—the lead teacher will train on the Montessori materials (golden beads, stamp game, racks & tubes, etc.), and a short asynchronous crash course on the work cycle can be provided. Willingness to complete this training is expected.
  • Experience with mixed-age or small-group instruction.

Schedule & Structure

  • Grade Levels: First through third grade girls (mixed-age second + third; first grade taught separately)
  • Typical Day: Second + third grade general studies in the morning; first grade in the afternoon (schedule to be confirmed)
  • Works Alongside: Mrs. Sarah Auerbach, Lead General Studies Teacher
  • Reports To: School administration (e.g., Mrs. Rogan); the lead teacher is a teaching partner, not the supervisor.
