Photobooth Studio Apprentice

A select interdisciplinary cohort composed of CPR teen fellows,  college students (Photography, Graphic Design, and related disciplines), and adults will be embedded within our Photobooth as Practice residency as studio apprentices.

Participation is structured, role-based, and collaborative. Rather than serving as assistants, cohort members operate within defined areas of responsibility, contributing directly to the technical, editorial, and public-facing dimensions of the project.

Cohort members will rotate through four integrated roles:

1. Technical Observation & Systems Documentation

Under the guidance of the residency team, students will observe mechanical calibration, chemical balancing, and workflow refinement. They will document these processes through logs, diagrams, annotated checklists, and process notes that later inform the publication’s “Machine” section.

2. Output & Archive Management

Students will organize test strips and final prints, sequence image sets, maintain quality control standards, and develop archival protocols for both physical and digital records.

3. Editorial & Publication Development

Working in collaboration with CIA design faculty and students, cohort members will assist with interviews, captions, metadata, layout drafts, and proof preparation. This role ensures that the publication reflects both artistic and pedagogical depth.

4. Public Activation Support

Students will facilitate open studio hours, assist with demonstration flow, gather participant feedback, and support structured programming sessions within the Cinematheque corridor.

Each cohort member will receive named credit in the final publication (e.g., Studio Apprentice / Assistant Editor) and contribute a signed process annotation, short essay, or visual insert. This ensures visible authorship alongside professional immersion.
