Senior Designer

A Senior Designer is a highly technical design professional responsible for developing and coordinating project design from concept through production. They lead design integration across disciplines and ensure design intent is clearly communicated to support procurement and construction activities. Senior Designers apply strong knowledge of industrial process flows, equipment, and design methodologies to develop Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), General Arrangement drawings, and overall project layouts. 

They are responsible for defining technical project scope, coordinating internal and external design resources, and supporting development of design schedules and budgets. Senior Designers consider all critical design variables—including spatial requirements, process constraints, equipment integration, building codes, and multidisciplinary engineering inputs—to deliver complete, constructible solutions. Working closely with Project Managers, they play a key role in planning and supporting project safety, budget, schedule, and quality on complex projects.

Top 5 role responsibilities: 

1.Direct design on projects  

  • Lead the development of project design from concept through detailed design, ensuring delivery of complete, accurate, and constructible design solutions.  
  • Develop and coordinate process layouts, general arrangement drawings, PFDs, equipment layouts, and supporting design documentation.  
  • Coordinate design efforts across all disciplines (process, mechanical, structural, electrical, automation) to ensure alignment and integration of systems.  
  • Lead and participate in Owner Design Coordination Meetings, driving clear communication, issue resolution, and progress tracking.  
  • Ensure design intent is communicated effectively to support procurement, fabrication, and construction activities.  
  • Guide the team in identifying and resolving design conflicts, constructability issues, and integration challenges.  
  • Perform site observations and field verification as needed to ensure design accuracy and alignment with real-world conditions.  
  • Ensure all design work incorporates safety, code compliance, and risk mitigation for all stakeholders (construction personnel, operators, and the public).  
  • Support development of scope, specifications, technical narratives, and design deliverables required to move projects forward.  
  • Deliver design services that meet expectations for quality, clarity, timeliness, and completeness. 

 

2.MENTOR LESS EXPERIENCED DESIGN TEAM MEMBERS 

  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to designers and engineers to improve design capability, problem-solving, and decision-making.  
  • Train team members on design standards, workflows, tools, and best practices.  
  • Review work and provide constructive feedback to help develop technical skill and design judgment.  
  • Support team members in understanding constructability, field conditions, and multidisciplinary coordination.  
  • Share lessons learned from past projects to reduce rework and improve design outcomes.  
  • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.  
  • Assist in onboarding and development of new team members to ensure consistent performance across the design team. 

 

3.DESIGN CALCULATIONS FOR COMPONENT SIZING AND CONSTRAINT IDENTIFICATION 

  • Perform and review calculations required to support equipment sizing, system layout, and process functionality.  
  • Evaluate constraints including space, utilities, access, structural limitations, process requirements, and installation considerations.  
  • Critique designs for safety, manufacturability, constructability, maintainability, functionality, and potential failure modes.  
  • Analyze problems using data, field observations, and engineering judgment to develop robust design solutions.  
  • Ensure calculations are clearly documented with assumptions, methodology, and results for traceability and review.  
  • Support coordination with other disciplines by providing technical inputs that drive design decisions.  
  • Identify risks or gaps in calculations and determine when additional engineering analysis or validation is required.  
  • Use calculations to improve performance, reliability, and efficiency of process and equipment systems. 

 

4.DESIGN TEAM COLLABORATION TASKS – RFIs AND SUBMITTALS ON PROCORE 

  • Lead and support resolution of RFIs, submittals, and design-related questions to ensure timely and accurate project execution.  
  • Review vendor submittals and equipment drawings for compliance with design intent, specifications, and project requirements.  
  • Collaborate with project stakeholders (owners, engineers, architects, contractors, vendors, and field personnel) to resolve design issues and clarify requirements.  
  • Use Procore and other collaboration tools to track design communication, issues, decisions, and updates.  
  • Ensure design changes resulting from RFIs, submittals, or field feedback are incorporated and communicated effectively.  
  • Support coordination of procurement by ensuring technical requirements are complete, accurate, and aligned with design intent.  
  • Communicate clearly and proactively to keep stakeholders informed of design progress, risks, and changes. 

 

5.Design Reviewer 

  • Review design deliverables for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with project scope, standards, and client requirements.  
  • Evaluate designs for safety, constructability, manufacturability, operability, and long-term performance.  
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, permits, and industry standards (OSHA, NFPA, building codes, etc.).  
  • Identify design risks, inconsistencies, or gaps and guide the team to resolve issues before construction or fabrication.  
  • Verify coordination across disciplines to minimize clashes, installation issues, and rework.  
  • Review drawings, models, calculations, and specifications to ensure quality and consistency across all deliverables.  
  • Confirm that designs align with project schedule, budget, and procurement requirements.  
  • Support continuous improvement by incorporating lessons learned and best practices into design reviews. 

 

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS 

  • 2 or 4-year degree from college or technical school in structural, architectural, electrical, or mechanical drafting or design. Combined experience and industry educational certifications to demonstrate competency will be considered.  
  • Minimum of 10 years of industry experience.   
  • Ability to work in a cross functional team environment, and communicate clearly is required. 
  • Strong design aptitude, experience, and ability is required.   
  • Experience equipment commissioning and startup, beneficial.   
  • Working knowledge of basic computer programs like Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and on-line collaboration tools. Proficient in Autodesk/Plant Design Suite products like Revit and AutoCAD is desired, with knowledge of Inventor, Navisworks, etc., beneficial.    
  • Travel up to 20% or as needed, by air and ground.  

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS  

  • Exerting 20–50 pounds of force occasionally, 10–25 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly. 
  • Continuously requires vision, hearing, twisting, and talking. 
  • Frequently requires standing, fine dexterity, sitting, and handling, typical of office work. 
  • Must be able to ascend and descend ladders, scaffolds, and stairs, and work in confined spaces and near loud equipment. 
  • Must be able to position oneself to work in confined spaces such as trenches, pits, manholes, attics, and tunnels. 
  • Must be able to move safely over uneven, irregular, or steep terrain and within confined spaces. 
  • Must be able to respond quickly to sounds and see and respond to dangerous situations. 
  • Must be able to wear personal protective gear most of the day. 
  • Must be able to work in cold/hot environments and on concrete floors. 
  • Occasionally requires walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, kneeling, pushing/pulling, bending, and crouching. 
  • Must be able to stand for extended durations.
