Position Overview
Hurricane Capital is seeking a Controller to oversee and strengthen the firm’s accounting, financial reporting, fund accounting, and internal control processes. This individual will play a key role in maintaining the financial integrity of the firm and its investment platform while partnering closely with senior leadership, investment teams, operations, fund administrators, auditors, tax advisors, and other external service providers.
The ideal candidate has strong technical accounting skills, experience in hedge funds or alternative investment management, and the ability to operate both strategically and hands-on in a growing organization.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting and Financial Control
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including the general ledger, accounts payable, expense management, accruals, reconciliations, and cash activity.
- Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
- Maintain and enhance internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and firm policies.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and management reporting processes.
Fund Accounting and Reporting
- Review fund accounting deliverables, including NAV calculations, capital account statements, investor allocations, and financial statements.
- Coordinate with third-party fund administrators to ensure accurate, timely, and complete reporting.
- Monitor fund-level expenses, management fees, incentive allocations, and other investment-related accounting matters.
- Assist with investor reporting, capital activity, and ad hoc fund analysis.
- Support the preparation and review of annual audited financial statements.
Audit, Tax, and Regulatory Support
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, legal counsel, administrators, and other service providers.
- Support annual audits, tax filings, regulatory reporting, and compliance-related financial requests.
- Maintain organized documentation and support for accounting judgments, reconciliations, and reporting processes.
- Assist in developing scalable processes to support future growth of the platform.
Business Partnership and Process Improvement
- Partner with investment, operations, risk, compliance, and leadership teams to provide financial insight and operational support.
- Identify opportunities to improve reporting quality, automate workflows, and enhance data integrity.
- Support special projects, including new fund launches, manager onboarding, system implementations, and strategic financial analysis.
- Help build a best-in-class finance function capable of supporting a growing institutional investment platform.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA strongly preferred.
- Relevant experience in hedge funds, private equity, asset management, fund administration, public accounting, or financial services.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, financial statement preparation, fund accounting, capital accounts, and investment products.
- Experience working with fund administrators, auditors, tax advisors, and other external service providers.
- Strong Excel skills and comfort working with accounting, reporting, and financial systems.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both finance and investment professionals.
- High integrity, sound judgment, and a proactive ownership mindset.
Preferred Experience
- Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Fund Controller, Fund Accounting Manager, or senior accounting professional within alternative investments.
- Experience with multi-manager platforms, hedge funds, managed accounts, or complex investment structures.
- Familiarity with management company accounting in addition to fund accounting.
- Experience improving accounting processes, implementing systems, or building scalable financial controls.
