Software Developer Intern

About the Role 

EMI Advisors is seeking a motivated Software Developer Intern to support the design, development, testing, and maintenance of modern software applications and cloud-based solutions. Working alongside experienced software engineers, data scientists, product managers, and designers, you will contribute to projects that support national and federal initiatives while gaining hands-on experience with modern development tools, cloud platforms, and Agile methodologies. 

This internship offers an opportunity to work across the software development lifecycle, building scalable applications, integrating APIs and databases, and developing solutions that address real-world business and government challenges. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Develop and implement new software features under the guidance of senior developers.  
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve software bugs and application issues.  
  • Write and maintain automated test scripts, unit tests, and integration tests to improve software quality.  
  • Execute manual and automated testing, validate functionality, and document test results.  
  • Assist with software deployment activities across development, testing, and production environments.  
  • Participate in code reviews and incorporate feedback to improve code quality.  
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code following established coding standards.  
  • Contribute to technical documentation, including user guides, release notes, and developer documentation.  
  • Collaborate with software developers, designers, analysts, and product managers throughout the software development lifecycle.  
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives.  
  • Use version control and CI/CD tools to support software development and release processes.  
  • Learn and apply modern software engineering best practices, tools, and technologies. 

Job Requirements 

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree or currently pursuing a Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field. 
  • 0–2 years of software development experience, including internships, research assistantships, teaching assistantships, academic projects, or personal/open-source projects.  
  • Experience with at least two programming languages, such as Python, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, or C++.  
  • Experience developing software applications using modern development frameworks and tools.  
  • Experience with front-end technologies (e.g., HTML, CSS, React, Angular, or Vue) and/or back-end development frameworks (e.g., Node.js, Spring Boot, Django, or .NET). 
  • Experience working with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server) and familiarity with SQL.  
  • Familiarity with Git and version control workflows.  
  • Experience with software testing concepts, including unit testing, integration testing, or automated testing frameworks.  
  • Familiarity with software debugging, troubleshooting, and defect resolution.  
  • Basic understanding of RESTful APIs and web services.  
  • Exposure to cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform through coursework, projects, or internships.  
  • Understanding software development lifecycle (SDLC) and Agile development methodologies.  
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.  
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.  
  • U.S. Citizenship or the ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience building or deploying full-stack web applications.  
  • Experience writing automated test scripts using frameworks such as JUnit, PyTest, Jest, Cypress, Playwright, Selenium, or similar tools.  
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tools such as GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or Jenkins.  
  • Experience with Docker or containerization technologies.  
  • Familiarity with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB, DynamoDB, or Neo4j.  
  • Exposure to deploying applications to cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or GCP).  
  • Experience contributing to team-based software projects using Agile methodologies.  
  • Knowledge of software documentation and technical writing best practices.  
  • Interest in cloud computing, data analytics, AI/ML, or enterprise software development.  
  • Experience working on research, capstone, or open-source software projects.
