UI/UX Design Intern

About the Role
EMI Advisors is seeking a motivated UI/UX Design Intern to support our analytics and product teams in designing intuitive, accessible, and engaging digital experiences. Working alongside experienced designers, developers, and product managers, you will contribute to user research, wireframes, prototypes, dashboards, and design systems that support innovative solutions for commercial and federal clients.
This internship provides hands-on experience in human-centered design, user research, data visualization, and product design while working on real-world software and analytics applications.
Applicants may be asked to provide a portfolio showcasing academic, personal, or professional design work during the interview process.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in designing intuitive, user-centered interfaces for web applications, dashboards, and digital products.
- Create wireframes, user flows, mockups, interactive prototypes, and design assets using modern design tools.
- Conduct user research, usability testing, and analyze user feedback to improve product usability and accessibility.
- Collaborate with software developers and product managers to translate user and business requirements into effective design solutions.
- Support the design and refinement of dashboards and data visualizations to improve user comprehension and decision-making.
- Contribute to maintaining and evolving design systems, style guides, and reusable UI components.
- Conduct competitive analysis and research industry trends, emerging technologies, and UX best practices.
- Document design decisions, user research findings, and usability recommendations.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies, design reviews, and cross-functional collaboration throughout the product development lifecycle.
Job Requirements
Required Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), User Experience Design, Graphic Design, Information Systems, Computer Science, Interaction Design, or a related field.
- Minimum 1-2 years of UX/UI design experience, including coursework, internships, research, academic projects, freelance work, or personal portfolio projects.
- Portfolio demonstrating user-centered design thinking, wireframing, prototyping, and visual design skills.
- Experience using design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or similar prototyping software.
- Understanding of UX principles, information architecture, interaction design, accessibility, and responsive design.
- Familiarity with user research methods, usability testing, and iterative design processes.
- Basic understanding of data visualization principles and dashboard design.
- Strong visual design skills, including typography, color theory, layout, spacing, and visual hierarchy.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and presentation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, Agile environment.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.
- U.S. Citizenship or the ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
- An industry-standard technology certification.
- Experience designing dashboards using Qlik, Tableau, Power BI, or similar analytics platforms.
- Familiarity with design systems and component libraries.
- Basic understanding of HTML, CSS, and responsive web design.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams
- Experience using Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, or similar tools).
- Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG) and inclusive design principles.
- Interest in enterprise software, analytics, cloud applications, or data-driven product design.
- Experience conducting usability studies or user interviews through academic or professional projects.
