Empowering the Next Generation of Sustainable Mobility Leaders

Overview

The ModeScore Student Innovation Network (MSIN) is a collaborative initiative between ModeScore and ESG Real Estate Laboratory (ESGreLab) that empowers university students to become active contributors to sustainable mobility research, innovation, and campus transformation.

The network provides students with hands-on experience by combining applied research, real-world consulting, and emerging technologies to address one of the most important challenges facing cities and universities today: creating healthier, more sustainable, and more accessible places through better mobility.

By engaging students from diverse disciplines—including urban planning, architecture, engineering, data science, business, sustainability, and real estate—MSIN transforms campuses into living laboratories where innovative ideas can be tested, measured, and implemented.

1. Campus Mobility Challenge

The Campus Mobility Challenge is the practical foundation of the Student Innovation Network.

Each participating university forms multidisciplinary student teams that conduct a comprehensive mobility assessment of their campus using the ModeScore framework.

Students will evaluate:

Safety and connectivity

Mobility-related carbon emissions

Following the assessment, each team develops a set of practical recommendations to improve campus mobility and presents its findings to university leadership.

2. Global Student Mobility Observatory

The Global Student Mobility Observatory creates an international research network where students contribute standardized mobility data from their campuses.

Using a shared methodology, participating universities collectively build one of the world's largest datasets on sustainable campus mobility.

The Observatory will collect information including:

Active transportation

Public transit accessibility

Cycling infrastructure

Walkability

Shared mobility services

Student travel behavior

Accessibility indicators

Mobility-related emissions

This collaborative dataset supports benchmarking, comparative research, and evidence-based decision-making.

Annual Publication

The Observatory will produce the:

Global Sustainable Campus Mobility Index

The report will benchmark participating universities, identify global best practices, highlight innovative mobility initiatives, and provide policy recommendations for improving campus sustainability.

Research generated through the Observatory may also contribute to academic publications, conference presentations, and collaborative projects between universities and industry partners.

3. AI & Mobility Innovation Lab

The AI & Mobility Innovation Lab enables students to apply emerging technologies to solve real mobility challenges.

Working in interdisciplinary teams, students design and develop digital tools that support data-driven mobility planning and sustainability reporting.
