Makerspace Teacher

Makerspace Teacher (Part-Time)

  • Location: Coco Academy Bella Vista (1001 Christian Street, Phila., PA 19147) or Coco Academy Queen Village (615 S 3rd Street, Phila., PA, 19147)
  • Position Type: Part-Time (est. 20hrs/wk)
  • Shift: Primarily After School (weekdays 3:00pm - 6:30pm) with opportunities for weekday evening and weekend programming
  • Compensation: $20 - $25/hour
  • Employment Period: August 24th - December 31st, 2026 (with opportunities for renewal)

What You'll Do

As a Makerspace Teacher, you will:

  • Lead engaging makerspace classes and workshops for children ages 5–14, with occasional adult programming.
  • Guide students through hands-on projects involving engineering, art, design, technology, fabrication, and creative problem-solving.
  • Collaborate with Coco Academy's Production Studio to develop and refine curriculum.
  • Foster a supportive, inclusive classroom culture that encourages curiosity, creativity, and growth.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and well-equipped makerspace environment.
  • Support positive student behavior through relationship-building and effective classroom management.
  • Escort students safely from nearby schools to Coco Academy when assigned.
  • Follow all safety procedures, child protection policies, and makerspace operating standards.

We're Looking For Someone Who

  • Has a background in creative and/or technical education or professional practice, including fields such as engineering, architecture, art, design, science, technology, or related disciplines. 
  • Enjoys working with children and helping them learn through making and exploration.
  • Has experience teaching, mentoring, coaching, or facilitating youth programs.
  • Is creative, patient, organized, and comfortable adapting to different learning styles.
  • Communicates effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Thrives in collaborative, fast-paced environments.
  • Is excited to continuously learn new tools, technologies, and teaching strategies.

Experience with one or more of the following is a plus:

  • Makerspaces or STEM education
  • Woodworking or hand tools
  • Digital fabrication (3D printing, laser cutting, CNC)
  • Robotics or electronics
  • Arts and crafts
  • Coding or physical computing
  • Design thinking or project-based learning

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children or adolescents (teaching, camps, after-school programs, tutoring, coaching, or similar settings).
  • Ability to lead groups independently while creating an engaging learning environment.
  • Reliable transportation to our Philadelphia makerspace.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds and remain active throughout teaching sessions.

Child Safety & Employment Requirements

Successful candidates must:

  • Pass all required employment background clearances prior to beginning work.
  • Comply with all Coco Academy child safety policies and procedures.
  • Meet Pennsylvania mandated reporter requirements and complete any required training.
  • Complete standard employment onboarding documentation.
