Site Lead Teacher
Position Summary
The Before & After School Program (BASP) Site Lead Teacher is responsible for the daily
operation of an assigned school-age child care site. The Site Lead provides leadership to staff,
ensures compliance with Michigan Child Care Licensing Rules, maintains a safe and engaging
environment for children, and serves as the primary contact for families, school personnel, and
the Program Administrator.
The Site Lead promotes a positive, inclusive, and nurturing environment where children are
encouraged to learn, build relationships, and develop social-emotional skills through play and
enrichment activities.

Essential Responsibilities
Program Leadership
● Supervise the daily operation of the assigned BASP site.
● Provide leadership, coaching, and support to assistant teachers and substitute staff.
● Ensure adequate staffing and maintain required child-to-staff ratios.
● Delegate daily responsibilities to staff and monitor completion.
● Foster a collaborative, professional, and positive team environment.
Child Supervision & Safety
● Maintain direct supervision of children at all times.
● Ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming learning environment.
● Conduct daily safety inspections of indoor and outdoor spaces.
● Monitor arrival, dismissal, transportation, and transitions.
● Respond appropriately to emergencies, illnesses, injuries, and behavioral incidents.
● Complete accident, injury, medication, and incident reports accurately and promptly.
Program Planning
● Plan and implement engaging, age-appropriate activities that support children's social,
emotional, physical, and cognitive development.
● Provide opportunities for homework assistance, outdoor play, STEM activities, arts and
crafts, games, and enrichment experiences.
● Encourage child choice, creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving.
● Maintain a consistent daily schedule and predictable routines.
Family Engagement
● Build positive relationships with children and families.
● Communicate professionally with parents regarding children's daily experiences,
accomplishments, and concerns.
● Welcome new families and support smooth transitions into the program.
● Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff.
Licensing Compliance
● Ensure compliance with all Michigan Child Care Licensing Rules and West Ottawa
Public Schools policies.
● Maintain required attendance records, emergency information, licensing documentation,
and daily program records.
● Prepare the site for licensing inspections and program audits.
● Report licensing concerns immediately to the Program Administrator.
Staff Support
● Assist with orientation and training of new staff.
● Provide ongoing coaching and constructive feedback.
● Model positive guidance and behavior management strategies.
● Support staff in implementing program expectations and safety procedures.
Facility Management
● Maintain an organized, clean, and inviting classroom environment.
● Monitor supplies and submit requests for replacement materials.
● Report maintenance, safety, and equipment concerns promptly.
● Ensure toys, equipment, and materials remain in good condition.
School Collaboration
● Develop positive working relationships with school administrators, office staff,
custodians, transportation personnel, and classroom teachers.
● Coordinate arrival and dismissal procedures with school staff.
● Support a positive partnership between the BASP program and the school community.
Administrative Responsibilities
● Complete required reports accurately and on time.
● Monitor daily attendance and enrollment.
● Assist with enrollment and family orientation as assigned.
● Communicate regularly with the Program Administrator regarding staffing, enrollment,
behavior concerns, incidents, and program needs.
● Attend required meetings, trainings, and professional development.
Qualifications
● Minimum age of 18 years.
● Meet Michigan Child Care Licensing qualifications for a Lead Caregiver in a School-Age
Child Care Program.
● Experience working with school-age children in an educational or child care setting.
● Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
● Ability to work collaboratively with staff, families, and school personnel.
● Current CPR, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogen training (or ability to obtain upon hire).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
● Strong classroom management and positive behavior guidance skills.
● Ability to supervise multiple staff and children effectively.
● Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
● Ability to organize activities and manage multiple priorities.
● Knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate practices.
● Commitment to providing an inclusive, safe, and engaging environment for all children.
Physical Requirements
● Ability to actively supervise children indoors and outdoors.
● Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift up to 40 pounds.
● Participate in active games, playground supervision, and emergency procedures.
● Ability to respond quickly to children's needs and emergency situations.
Work Schedule
This position typically works split shifts during the school year:
● Morning Program: Approximately 6:30 a.m.–9:00 a.m.
● Afternoon Program: Approximately 3:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m.
Additional hours may be required for staff meetings, professional development, family
events, or program preparation.
