ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW:
The American Council of the Blind (ACB) is a national non-profit organization that aims to increase the independence, security, equality of opportunity, and quality of life for all blind and visually impaired people. ACB was founded in 1961 and has since been actively involved in policy reform, legal advocacy, as well as grassroots program management to meet the needs of its members at every level.
LOCATION:
Alexandria, VA (Hybrid option available)
SUMMARY:
ACB is looking for an undergraduate intern to work with the advocacy team on their ongoing projects. The advocacy team frequently interacts with Congress and numerous federal agencies to advocate for the rights of people who are blind. Additionally, ACB also engages in advocacy work with major corporate players.
ACB internships generally last 30, 60, or 90 days depending on the intern’s availability. However, ACB will accommodate students with specific course requirements.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Administrative duties: returning phone calls, taking notes during meetings, other office management tasks.
- Research: conducting thorough research on assigned topics, presenting findings, editing documents as required.
- The intern may also be invited to attend virtual or in person meetings with congressional or federal agency offices.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Advocacy and Governmental Affairs.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Undergraduate student majoring in political science, public policy, or related fields.
- Proficient in Microsoft 365 with an emphasis on using Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Strong working knowledge in the use of Zoom.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advocacy experience
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This role is in-person at our Alexandria, VA office with sedentary work that mostly involves sitting/standing.
INTERNSHIP TYPE:
Part time (Hourly requirement will be decided based on the intern’s availability and ACB advocacy team’s requirements)
