ASL Video Reporting Fellow

15 West is a hyperlocal newsroom covering Chicago's West Side, and suburbs like Berwyn, and Cicero, with a resident-reporter model and a strong commitment to accessibility. We're looking for an ASL Video Reporting Fellow to create short, weekly video content that brings our reporting, and Deaf/accessibility resources, to a wider audience.

This is a learning-focused fellowship: light weekly workload, mentorship, real published bylines, and a portfolio of public-facing work by the end of the term.

What You'll Make

One short-form video per week, always under 1 minute, posted to 15 West's social channels.

Time Commitment

  • ~1.5-2 hours per week (scripting, filming, light editing)
  • ~6 month fellowship term
  • Fully remote/flexible around class schedule

Stipend

  • $1,000 total for the 6-month fellowship term (paid in installments)

Who We're Looking For

  • A student, comfortable and confident on camera
  • Fluent or highly proficient in ASL
  • Active on social media / understands short-form video formats (Reels, Shorts, TikTok-style pacing)
  • Interested in journalism, accessibility, and/or Deaf community advocacy

What You Get

  • Paid stipend
  • Byline and on-air credit across all published pieces
  • Mentorship from 15 West's editorial team
  • A public portfolio of produced video work
  • Flexible, low-pressure workload built around your schedule
