Position Overview
The Student Union, Inc. is 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San José State University in downtown San José, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center (PCUEC), and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.

Job Summary
Under general supervision, the AV Technician will be the first point of contact with clients and guests and performs services such as the setup, operation, and strike of event spaces, audio, lighting, video, staging, electrical and/or other technical equipment, and provides for high quality, efficient, and effective production of events in Student Union and throughout campus.

Essential Functions and Tasks

  • Assist with events throughout campus and the Student Union building, including but not limited to set up, strike, and operation of audio, lighting, video, staging, electrical, and/or other technical equipment.
  • Responsible for learning and following industry safety standards and Student Union Inc. policies and procedures
  • Responsible for maintaining professional attitude and conduct at all times due to primary contact with event clients and guests.
  • Responsible for making event decisions that directly affect the operation and public image of the Student Union.
  • Responsible for assisting clients, guests, and/or other SU staff in the operation of audio visual systems.
  • Duties consist of assisting in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of technical systems and technical equipment.
  • Duties consist of the enforcement of SU building policies and procedures.
  • Duties consist of assisting with building emergencies and/or building evacuations, and life safety issues during events.
  • Assist in the preparation of detailed event reports and other paper work as needed

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to listen and follow detailed instructions.
  • Ability to work with and professionally interact with various groups of people including, staff, clients, students, and patrons in a highly diverse environments.
  • Basic understanding of event related technical systems and equipment, sound, lighting, staging, or video preferred.
  • Willingness to learn and quickly acquire necessary skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Prior event and customer service experience preferred
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision through completion of an assigned event or project
  • Following certifications are required within the first 90 days of working, CPR/First Aid/Blood Borne pathogen/forklift certification training
  • Must be a matriculated SJSU student and continuously enrolled at least half-time* during the academic term. 
    • *Half-time is defined as follows: Enrollment Status Half-time Units Undergraduate and Post baccalaureate Students 6.0-8.0 hours/semester

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • The AV technician must have the ability to rapidly acquire and develop skills and an ability to follow direction
  • Employee frequently uses hand to manipulate objects, tools, and controls
  • Ability to maintain professional and courteous attitude and conduct at all times
  • Ability to safely lift and push a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Employee may be required to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends
  • Must have excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Employee frequently works in loud and noisy environments
  • Employee might be exposed to potentially hazardous conditions or environments
  • AV technician must have the ability to work with minimal supervision through the completion of an assigned event or project
  • Provide prompt help desk support; train and assist users with the use of computer peripherals and installed software operation
  • Using Qualys, identify security vulnerabilities, implement corrective actions and perform vulnerability preventative maintenance on computers
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, resolve and upgrade workstation hardware desktop operating systems issues and applications include, but are not limited to Windows 10, Windows 11, macOS, and Microsoft Office.
  • Troubleshoot both wired and wireless network connectivity and network-based systems (printers, biometric hand scanners, etc.)
  • Assist in the administration, troubleshooting and maintenance of the IT based business systems; including, but not limited to: Web servers, Windows firewalls, switches, networked print servers and printers, and user accounts
  • Monitor and maintain campus IT provided enterprise solutions: Qualys, Sophos Central, Jamf and Intune
  • Maintain system documentation and inventory records, including maintenance records, parts inventory, system layouts, physical diagrams, and software license record

Work Requirements

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • The position works in an indoor, recreation facility program-oriented environment.
    • The physical demands of this position are described below
      • Sitting, walking, twisting, bending, climbing, pulling, pushing, squatting, crawling, kneeling, balancing, reaching, and coordination (eye, hand, foot).
      • Fall (Slip, Trip) Conditions that result in falls (impacts) from height or traditional walking and playing surfaces.
      • Lifting and carrying, often 10-25lbs, frequently 26-50lbs, occasionally 50-75 lbs.
      • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
      • Dexterity of hands, fingers, and wrists to operate a computer keyboard and calculator.
  • In general, the position works a schedule based on business needs 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday, and may require evening and weekend work as needed.
    • When school is in session - may work up to, but not in excess of 20 hours per week (among all concurrent positions).
    • When classes are not in session (i.e. summer break) may work up to, but not in excess of 40 hours per week.

This position is employed through the Student Union at San Jose State University which offers employees to receive 40 hours of sick pay during the calendar year.

Background Check and Fingerprinting
Student Union employees are required to undergo and complete a successful background check that includes verification of employment and education, as well as a check of criminal records for employment. This policy includes emergency hires and may also be applicable to volunteers depending on the work performed. In some cases, the background check will include a credit check and/or a Department of Motor Vehicles check, as well as a check of licenses and certificates when applicable. All background checks are conducted through the Student Union third-party vendor, Accurate Background.

California State University (CSU) Learning and Development

Within the first month, all employees are required to complete the following compliance online training session through CSU Learn, the University’s employee training platform. Employees will be enrolled in the training soon after their appointment is processed and will be notified via email from CSULearning@sjsu.edu
