About BMC Founded in 2017, B-RELYT Math Collective (BMC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to expanding math confidence, STEM access, and academic opportunity for students and families. BMC delivers math-centered programming, mentoring, curriculum support, and STEM enrichment designed to help students see math as a gateway to future success.
Position Overview BMC is seeking passionate and knowledgeable Math Mentors to provide individualized and small-group math support for students across various grade levels. The ideal candidate is patient, dependable, encouraging, and able to make math concepts clear, accessible, and engaging. This role may include virtual tutoring, in-person afterschool support, curriculum preparation, and representation of BMC at select events.
Key Responsibilities
- Represent BMC professionally at programs, school sites, community events, and partner activities.
- Provide one-on-one and small-group math mentoring tailored to each student’s needs, learning style, and academic goals.
- Teach in person at school-site locations for BMC after-school programming, as needed. Understand working with unincorporated schools
- Support the development, refinement, and updating of BMC math curriculum and instructional materials.
- Prepare and deliver lesson plans that reinforce classroom learning and build math confidence.
- Assess student strengths, areas for growth, and progress through regular check-ins and evaluations.
- Assist students with homework, projects, test preparation, and foundational skill-building.
- Create a positive, encouraging learning environment that motivates students to do their best.
- Use a variety of teaching strategies and resources to make math concepts accessible and engaging.
- Maintain clear communication with students, parents/guardians, and BMC staff regarding progress and concerns.
- Keep accurate records of tutoring sessions, attendance, student progress, and assigned follow-up.
- Participate in training sessions, workshops, and team meetings to stay aligned with BMC practices and expectations
- Be available to drive between Inglewood and west Los Angeles
Qualifications
· Currently enrolled in a STEM, mathematics, education, engineering, computer science, or related degree program. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply.
· Previous tutoring, mentoring, teaching, or youth development experience preferred.
· Strong math proficiency, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and/or statistics. · Ability to explain complex concepts in a clear, student-friendly manner.
· Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
· Patience, adaptability, professionalism, and reliability. · Positive attitude and enthusiasm for working with young people.
· Commitment to BMC’s mission, values, and student-centered approach. Preferred Availability · Availability for part-time virtual tutoring and/or in-person programming in Los Angeles County. · Availability for after-school hours, evenings, or select weekend programming, depending on student and program needs.
