Audio Engineer Intern
Position Overview
Soundmirror is seeking a motivated Audio Engineer Intern to join our team of recording engineers and producers. This internship offers hands-on experience supporting professional recording projects in both studio and live performance environments, with opportunities to work on projects featuring internationally recognized artists, orchestras, ensembles, and cultural organizations.
The ideal candidate has a strong technical foundation, excellent musicianship, creative problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to producing exceptional classical recordings. This internship offers an opportunity to develop practical engineering skills in a collaborative, professional recording environment.
This position is based in Lowell, Massachusetts. Work is primarily on-site, with occasional travel to recording locations as project needs require.
What You'll Learn
As an Audio Engineer Intern at Soundmirror, you'll gain hands-on experience working alongside experienced recording engineers and producers on professional recording projects. Throughout the internship, you'll have opportunities to develop skills in:
- Professional studio and location recording techniques for classical, opera, choral, and acoustic music.
- Microphone selection, placement, and stereo recording methods for a variety of ensembles and performance spaces.
- Session setup, signal flow, troubleshooting, and operation of professional recording equipment.
- Audio editing, mixing, mastering, and preparation of final deliverables using industry-standard software.
- Best practices for file organization, session management, backups, and production workflows.
- Working professionally with artists, conductors, producers, and clients in both studio and live recording environments.
- Time management, communication, and collaboration in a fast-paced production setting.
- The complete production process—from pre-production planning through recording, post-production, and final delivery.
By the end of the internship, you'll have gained practical experience in professional audio production and a deeper understanding of the technical, creative, and collaborative skills required for a career in recording engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior engineers and producers with recording, editing, mixing, and mastering sessions in both studio and remote recording environments.
- Set up, operate, troubleshoot, and break down professional audio equipment, including microphones, preamps, converters, monitoring systems, and recording software.
- Support projects throughout the production process, from session preparation and recording through post-production and final delivery.
- Collaborate with engineers, producers, and other team members to meet project objectives, quality standards, deadlines, and client expectations.
- Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor and appearance when working with clients, artists, and colleagues.
- Organize and maintain studio equipment, session files, and workspaces to support efficient operations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support Soundmirror's production and business operations.
- Lift and transport equipment weighing up to 75 pounds and travel to off-site recording locations as needed, with reasonable accommodation where applicable.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current enrollment in or recent completion of a degree or certificate program in Audio Engineering, Music Production, Recording Arts, or a related field.
- Working knowledge of professional DAWs, such as Pyramix or Pro Tools.
- Familiarity with studio signal flow, microphone techniques, and digital audio fundamentals.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to learn, accept feedback, and adapt to changing project needs.
- Reliable transportation for travel to recording locations is preferred.
Work Schedule & Internship Term
This is a part-time internship averaging approximately 25 hours per week, depending on project needs.
Schedules vary based on production requirements. While some work may be scheduled flexibly, many sessions require availability during client-driven recording times, including occasional evenings and weekends.
The internship is expected to last for one academic semester, with start and end dates determined in coordination with the selected candidate and Soundmirror.
Interns are expected to comply with Soundmirror's scheduling, timekeeping, and overtime policies, consistent with applicable federal, state, and local wage and hour laws.
Compensation
- $18.00 per hour
- Paid on a semi-monthly schedule (the 1st and 16th of each month).
- Overtime, when applicable, is compensated in accordance with federal, state, and local wage and hour laws.
Additional Information
Interns will receive Soundmirror's Personnel Policy Manual and onboarding materials and will be asked to acknowledge receipt. The Personnel Policy Manual is not an employment contract and may be revised from time to time, consistent with applicable law.
Employment with Soundmirror is at will, meaning either the intern or Soundmirror may end the internship at any time, with or without notice or cause, subject to applicable law and any written agreement signed by an authorized representative of Soundmirror providing otherwise.
