SUMMARY:
Technology Specialist II is responsible for providing advanced technical support to local network or system users, including troubleshooting difficult user software or hardware problems and repairing equipment, often functioning in a "help desk" capacity as a desktop troubleshooting expert. Additionally, the position provides network infrastructure and server support, serving as an intermediate to expert support technician for mission critical Information Systems.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor degree in electronics or computer technology and repair is required; an Associate degree or at least three (3) or more years experience in supporting computer networks, server systems, repairing computer equipment, etc, may be considered.
- Five (5) or more years experience in supporting computer networks, server systems, repairing computer equipment, etc.
- Experience in data processing techniques, or equivalent advanced training.
- Experience in the installation and configuration of client software for business groupware applications such as those used by Finance, Human Resources, Human Services, and Sales.
- Experience or equivalent training in network server installation and configuration.
- Knowledge of the various networking devices and protocols used to support business functions, such as routers, switches, hubs, patch panels, TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, Appletalk and UDP.
- Excellent personal computer skills in a Windows environment, including spreadsheet, Word, publishing, calendaring, and general office support applications.
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair/resolve problems with desktop and server hardware and software.
- Ability to troubleshoot network connectivity and routing problems
- Capable of communicating complex technical issues to system users and vendor support agents.
- Ability to organize projects, upgrades, and installations, to meet deadlines and user demands.
- Exceptional personal computing skills in a variety of operating environments.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responds to and resolves user problems.
- Maintains file security and confidentiality of information.
- Installs equipment and software.
- Performs product and best use evaluations and making recommendations for hardware and software purchases.
- Makes repairs to computer hardware or makes recommendations to use outside repair service.
- Provides server installation, configuration, maintenance, and back-up.
- Troubleshoots and corrects server and network problems.
- Trains users in system, network, or software capabilities and functions. Training can be one-on-one or in a classroom setting.
- Develops user documentation when necessary or requested.
- Attends required meetings and participates in various seminars and training classes to maintain or acquire needed skills.
- Supervises summer youth, labor pool, and program interns when required.
- Participates as an active technical lead on projects assigned by the IS Director.
- Other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work is almost exclusively in doors in a controlled climate area.
- Hours are typically 8-5, but possibly with some extra hours. May involve some evening or weekend working and occasionally an 'on call' system covering emergency situations.
- Will involve working with many different people who are somewhat distressed in some way; challenging language comprehension issues during some vendor support calls.
- Local travel may be frequent and is required, travel outside the state is limited.
