Located in the heart of Washington, D.C. across from the Supreme Court, Florida House on Capitol Hill is America’s Only State Embassy. Our mission is to connect, celebrate, and champion Florida. Internship Overview:
The Florida House on Capitol Hill Fall Internship is for motivated students and recent graduates looking for a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience a non-profit organization on Capitol Hill. This fall internship program is available for up to three students who will be working in Washington D.C. from September 8th through December 4th (Thanksgiving week off, 12 weeks total). During the 5-day workweek, interns will work a total of 20 hours per week. The only exception will be during the week of October 20-23; we will require extended hours to facilitate our Annual Fall Trustee Meeting around Washington D.C. While working for Florida House, the three interns will collaborate with staff on important internal communications, development, and congressional-relations projects.
Position Dates and Schedule:
- Internship Duration: September 8 - December 4 (12 weeks, minus Thanksgiving week)
- Work Schedule:
- 20 hours per week at Florida House with availability for periodic, pre-scheduled weekday evening events
- Some additional flexibility is needed to staff Fall Trustee Meeting
Internship Responsibilities:
- Florida House Tasks:
- Work on projects with staff related to nonprofit development, marketing, hospitality, communications, event-management, and more
- Assist in program development and outreach efforts for Florida-based events and initiatives (including FL|DC Connect, Faux Friday, and the Fall Trustee Meeting)
- Conduct real-world hospitality and event planning/execution practice
- Collaborate with your fellow interns in workshops related to professional and personal development.
- Host Floridians visiting the Embassy by giving tours and offering orange juice.
Skills and Knowledge Acquired:
- Experience in event planning, public relations, and community engagement.
- Hands-on experience with non-profit management and communications strategies.
- Insight into Florida’s role in federal policy, particularly through congressional outreach.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current student or recent graduate pursuing a degree in Communications, Nonprofit Management, Hospitality, Government, Political Science, Public Policy, or a related field.
- Strong interest in Florida politics, government relations, and/or non-profit work.
- Ability to work independently, demonstrate a self-starter attitude, and have excellent organizational skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to compose clear, concise materials.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (including Outlook) and general office tasks; familiarity with social media and marketing tools.
- Experience in Canva and with content creation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current resident of Florida/attending a Florida university, or Floridians attending Washington D.C.-based universities.
- Thrives in a fast-flowing, dynamic work environment with a semi-flexible schedule.
- Prior internship or volunteer experience in a government office or non-profit organization.
- Knowledge of Florida’s political landscape and/or experience with public policy issues.
Compensation:
This internship offers a total stipend of $2,000, which will be paid in two installments: $1,000 at the end of the first week of the of the internship, and $1,000 at the halfway point of the internship
