Lead Teacher
Position Purpose:
The Lead Teacher is responsible for the overall planning, organization, and management of the infant classroom. This role ensures that all children are cared for in a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment. The Lead Teacher works in partnership with assistant teachers, parents, and the center directors to support each child’s growth and well-being.
Daily Duties and Responsibilities:
Health, Safety & Supervision
- Maintain constant supervision of children during all activities, ensuring safety at all times.
- Conduct and document daily health checks upon arrival.
- Follow all diapering and toileting procedures in accordance with licensing and center policies.
- Sanitize toys, equipment, and surfaces daily (or as needed throughout the day).
- Follow all state licensing regulations, safety standards, and emergency procedures.
Development & Learning
- Plan and implement age-appropriate activities that promote motor, language, sensory, and social development.
- Observe and engage with children during play, story time, outside play, and other learning moments.
- Use positive, respectful, and nurturing communication throughout the day.
- Adapt activities based on developmental stages and individual needs.
Documentation & Communication
- Complete daily reports for each child (feeding, diapering, sleep, activities, mood, etc.) using Brightwheel.
- Observe and record developmental milestones and concerns in accordance with the center’s assessment tools.
- Maintain open, respectful, and professional communication with parents at drop-off, pick-up, and throughout the day.
- Notify the Director of any concerns regarding child development, behavior, or health.
Classroom Environment
- Set up and maintain a clean, organized, and stimulating classroom environment.
- Rotate toys and materials regularly to encourage exploration and learning.
- Maintain a calm and peaceful classroom tone through voice, routines, and transitions.
Team Collaboration
- Work closely with assistant teachers to ensure smooth classroom flow and consistent care.
- Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development as scheduled.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues and leadership regarding classroom needs or concerns.
- Support substitute teachers or floaters with guidance when necessary.
General Expectations:
- Arrive on time and follow the assigned schedule.
- Wear appropriate, professional attire (per the staff dress code).
- Use respectful language and maintain a positive attitude in all interactions.
- Follow all center policies, procedures, and licensing requirements.
- Demonstrate flexibility and a team-oriented mindset.
- Maintain confidentiality of all child and family information.
- Work hours are subject to change at the discretion of leadership in order to meet the needs of the center and the families we serve. Flexibility in scheduling is expected and appreciated as we work together to maintain consistent, high-quality care.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift children up to 30 lbs.
- Able to bend, squat, sit on the floor, and stand for extended periods.
- Must be able to respond quickly to emergencies and changes in a child’s behavior.
- Participate in both indoor and outdoor activities as part of the daily routine.
Qualifications:
Required Education
- High School Diploma or GED and one of the following:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field
Required Experience
- At least 2 years of experience in a licensed child care center working with children
- Previous classroom leadership or curriculum planning experience preferred
Certifications
- Current CPR and Pediatric First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain upon hire)
- Completion of state-required health and safety training.
- Required to obtain and provide all necessary background clearances, including but not limited to criminal history, child abuse, and FBI fingerprint clearances, prior to employment.
