Position Description

The Theatre Production EDGE Intern supports the planning, creation, coordination, and execution of productions for the Department of Theatre & Dance. Working alongside faculty, staff, guest artists, and fellow students, the intern contributes to the successful production of Mainstage productions, Second Stage Series productions, dance concerts, and senior capstone performances.

This position provides hands-on experience across multiple areas of theatrical production, including scenic construction, props, costumes, lighting, sound, production management, box office operations, and backstage support. Through active participation in the production process, students develop transferable skills applicable to careers in theatre, live entertainment, arts administration, and related creative industries.

Key Responsibilities

Production Support

  • Assist with scenic construction, painting, strike, and backstage operations.
  • Support costume, props, lighting, and sound preparation and implementation.
  • Assist with technical rehearsals, performances, and production changeovers.

Production Operations

  • Participate in production meetings and collaborate with faculty, guest artists, and student production teams.
  • Assist with production management, scheduling, box office support, and event logistics.
  • Maintain theatre spaces, equipment, tools, materials, and production inventories.

Experiential Learning Opportunities

EDGE Interns gain hands-on experience supporting live theatrical productions while developing technical, creative, and operational skills used throughout the performing arts industry. Students may gain exposure to scenic construction, lighting, sound, costume and prop management, production management, audience services, event operations, and backstage coordination.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled Converse University student in good academic standing.
  • Strong interest in theatrical production, technical theatre, or arts management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a creative and production team.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and solve problems in fast-paced environments.
  • Dependable, detail-oriented, and willing to learn new skills.
  • Flexibility to assist with evening rehearsals and productions as schedules require.
  • Prior technical theatre experience is beneficial but not required.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Standing for extended periods.
  • Lifting and carrying materials.
  • Participation in event setup, production work, and strike activities.

Supervision, Mentorship & Evaluation

EDGE Interns receive ongoing coaching, mentorship, and project-based feedback from faculty, staff, and production supervisors throughout the academic year. Students receive guidance on technical skills, production processes, workplace expectations, and professional development within the performing arts industry.

As part of the Converse EDGE Internship Program, interns participate in a structured assessment process designed to measure growth in career readiness competencies and professional development.

  • Duration: Fall 2026 and Spring 2027
  • Pay Rate: $12.00 per hour
  • Schedule: Determined in coordination with production schedules and departmental needs
  • Positions will remain open until filled. Hiring timelines vary by department, and some supervisors may move more quickly through the interview and selection process than others. Early application is encouraged.
