Paramedic - 1N – Emergency Department

CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi - Shoreline overlooking Corpus Christi Bay is the largest and foremost acute care medical facility in the region, with a full range of diagnostic and surgical specialty services in cardiac, cancer, and stroke care. It is the leading emergency facility in the area with a Level II Trauma Center in the Coastal Bend, staffed with physicians and nurses specially trained in emergency services. 


  • The Pavilion and North Tower house a state-of-the-art emergency department, ICU, Cardiac Cath Lab, and surgical suites

Summary:

The Paramedic is a certified and/or licensed paramedic and is part of the Emergency Department patient care team who collaboratively works in a complementary and assistive role with nursing. The Paramedic performs a variety of RN delegated tasks under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. He/she assists the nursing staff in providing patient care in accordance with training, competence and skill. He/she is knowledgeable of and follows all hospital policies and procedures. Consistently assists the patient care team with maintaining a clean, well-organized, adequately stocked and safe patient environment. 

Responsibilities:


  • Maintains a clean and safe environment, and manages all assigned supplies and equipment

  • Demonstrates proficiency in setting up procedures as delegated.

  • Completely operates patient monitoring equipment, records, rhythm strips, runs 12 lead EKGs, biomarkers and glucometer readings under the direction of the RN.

  • Performs phlebotomy, collects laboratory specimens as ordered and inserts saline lock, foley catheter and nasal gastric tubes under the direction of the RN.

  • Assist in patient care, obtains and documents vital signs, provides patient hygiene, maintains clear and respectful communications with patients, families and the healthcare team.

  • Transports patients to radiology and nursing units utilizing appropriate transport and monitoring equipment. 

Requirements:

Education/Skills

  • High School Graduate or equivalent

Experience

  • Two to three years’ experience in a doctor’s office or other ambulatory health care setting

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications


  • Certified EMT – P (Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic)

  • CPR (American Heart Association)

  • ACLS within 6 months of hire/transfer date

  • BLS

  • De-escalation training required within 90 days of hire/transfer date

  • PALS within 18 months of hire/transfer date
