ESL Instructor (Part-Time)

Part-Time | Hybrid | Adult Education

Organization: Migrants Empowered (formerly C&J Migrant Solutions Foundation)
Reports To: Interim Director of Education
Location: Prince George's County, MD (In-person classes with limited remote planning)
Hours: 2–4 hours per week (One to two classes weekly, plus brief preparation time)
Compensation: $35–$50 per instructional hour (Based on experience and certifications)

Migrants Empowered (formerly C&J Migrant Solutions Foundation) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering African, Caribbean, and Afro-Latino migrant families throughout Prince George's County and the greater DMV region.

Through immigration legal services, citizenship preparation, English as a Second Language (ESL), workforce development, technology training, financial literacy, and community support programs, we help individuals build brighter futures through education, opportunity, and self-sufficiency.

Our Adult Education Program equips participants with the English language skills needed to succeed in the workplace, pursue higher education, navigate daily life confidently, and work toward U.S. citizenship.

Position Overview

Migrants Empowered is seeking a passionate, engaging, and student-centered ESL Instructor to teach adult English language learners in a welcoming and culturally responsive environment.

The ideal candidate is committed to helping immigrant and migrant adults build confidence in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English while fostering an inclusive classroom where learners feel respected, encouraged, and empowered.

This position is ideal for educators who enjoy making a meaningful community impact while working flexible, part-time hours.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction

  • Teach adult ESL classes at beginning, intermediate, and/or advanced levels.
  • Deliver engaging, interactive lessons that support all four language domains:
    • Speaking
    • Listening
    • Reading
    • Writing
  • Differentiate instruction to accommodate varying learning styles and language abilities.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and encouraging learning environment.

Lesson Planning

  • Prepare lesson plans aligned with the program curriculum with oversight from Director.
  • Incorporate real-life scenarios and practical English language applications.
  • Integrate conversation practice, pronunciation, vocabulary development, and grammar instruction.
  • Utilize educational technology and multimedia resources when appropriate.

Student Assessment

  • Monitor learner progress throughout each session.
  • Conduct informal assessments to evaluate language development.
  • Maintain accurate attendance and learner progress records.
  • Provide constructive feedback and encouragement to students.

Classroom Engagement

  • Encourage student participation and collaboration.
  • Build learner confidence through interactive activities and group discussions.
  • Promote consistent attendance and program completion.
  • Support students in achieving their personal, educational, and employment goals.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Interim Director of Education to implement curriculum and instructional strategies.
  • Participate in occasional instructor meetings and professional development opportunities.
  • Communicate participant needs and recommend instructional improvements.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must possess:

  • Current ESL Teaching Certification (TESOL, TEFL, CELTA, or equivalent preferred)
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, TESOL, English, Linguistics, Adult Education, or a related field (or equivalent teaching experience)
  • Minimum 1 year of ESL teaching experience with adult learners preferred, but not required.
  • Strong classroom management and communication skills.
  • Ability to create an engaging and inclusive learning environment.
  • Reliable transportation to instructional sites within Prince George's County, Maryland.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with the following experience are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Experience teaching immigrant, refugee, or migrant populations.
  • Experience teaching multi-level adult ESL classes.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles.
  • Bilingual or multilingual (Spanish, French, Haitian Creole, Amharic, Swahili, Arabic, or other languages commonly spoken within immigrant communities).
  • Experience using Google Classroom, Zoom, or other instructional technology platforms.

The selected instructor will be expected to:

  • Teach assigned weekly classes consistently and professionally.
  • Prepare engaging lessons that support measurable learner progress.
  • Maintain attendance and learner records.
  • Foster a welcoming classroom culture that encourages participation.
  • Collaborate with program leadership to improve instructional quality.
  • Maintain professional communication with staff and participants.
  • Encourage learner retention and successful program completion.
