Elementary School After-School Director/Supervisor
Elementary School After-School Director/Supervisor ($23-30 an hour DOE, 15-20 hours/wk)
UP Academy, a small project-based elementary school in San Mateo (near the Hillsdale Caltrain), is seeking a caring and reliable After-School Director/Supervisor to oversee our after-care program Monday through Friday, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
We are intentionally a very small school, which means you will supervise just 10–20 students alongside one other adult. Students, recent graduates, career changers, and other applicants interested in education and psychology are encouraged to apply. Previous experience is welcomed but not required. UP Academy provides two weeks of paid onboarding and training from August 17–28. This job starts August 17.
UP Academy’s core behavioral framework is Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Adults are proactive about noticing and verbalizing positive student choices. The most essential quality for this position is the ability to remain kind, calm, and curious when children are experiencing strong feelings. You will be trained in research-backed strategies on emotional regulation. UP Academy recognizes that children mirror and learn the emotional regulation of the adults around them. We do not support the use of intimidation, shame, or heightened energy to enforce discipline.
Job Responsibilities
- Keep students safe, supervised, and accounted for at all times during program hours.
- Maintain accurate attendance and sign-in/sign-out records.
- Provide snacks, enforce our food allergen policies, respond and document injuries.
- Model and guide students in cleaning up and resetting the playground spaces.
- Supervise free play. No lesson planning is required; your primary role is maintaining safety and, secondarily, coaching students through conflict resolution when needed.
- Use UP Academy’s social-emotional learning (SEL) free play framework as an opportunity for children to practice their social-emotional skills through screen-free free play. Your job is not to entertain students. Let children work through boredom to independently find things to do.
- Observe student play for emerging conflicts and provide coaching and intervention if needed.
- Document student social-emotional successes and challenges.
- Interest in occasionally substitute during the school day or supporting weekend maker-space open hours is a plus, but not required.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Strong emotional regulation, and a positive, confident, consistent communication style.
- Commitment to learn the social-emotional systems used at UP Academy.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain certification before beginning work.
- TB clearance or certification of freedom from active tuberculosis, as required by applicable law.
- Successful completion of any required Live Scan fingerprinting and background-clearance process.
Employment is contingent upon completion of all required clearances and onboarding requirements.
