Who We Are

GALA Choruses leads the LGBTQIA+ choral movement in North and South America. We cultivate the artistic development of 12,000+ singers from nearly 200 choruses throughout the Americas. GALA Choruses works closely with the other LGBTQIA+ membership associations around the world including Unison in Canada, Legato in Europe, Proud Voices Asia, and Out & Loud & Proud in Australia.

We are best known for our quadrennial Festival, the largest LGBTQIA+ choral event in the world. GALA Choruses also hosts an annual Leadership Symposium, and we offer a variety of support, networking, and publicity opportunities for our members. We also produce multiple resources available to all in the LGBTQIA+ choral movement regardless of their membership in GALA Choruses.

What You Will Do

You’ll be supervised by the Communications & Membership Manager and work closely with the Executive Director for the majority of your internship, with opportunities to meet and collaborate with other staff or board members. About half of your work will be writing, designing, and editing communications, with opportunities to develop content strategy and branding, covering social media, podcast, email newsletters and marketing, website, and/or print and digital collateral. The other half of your work will support administrative and operational needs, particularly for our event planning for Symposium 2027 and Festival 2028. We will try to customize your responsibilities where we can to overlap with your specific skills and other areas of interest: for example, membership engagement and recruitment, fundraising and development, working with boards and committees, marketing, reporting, digital library organization, or history and archive work.

Communications (50%)

Responsibilities may include:

  • Create engaging content for GALA Choruses’ social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok) and support community engagement
  • Edit and prepare episodes of our Queer Voices podcast for distribution
  • Gather content for and create newsletters and other email campaigns
  • Design promotional materials and graphics
  • Add and manage content on our website, and assist with the final steps of our website redesign
  • Use tools like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite
  • Gather our monthly reach report and participate in communications committee meetings
  • Support the development of our content strategy and brand, including drafting our content calendar and sharing feedback and ideas for new branding projects

Nonprofit Management (50%)

Responsibilities may include:

  • Assist with budget and finance monitoring and reporting
  • Support various staff with event planning needs, such as production planning, operations, artistic development, funding, and marketing
  • Tracking event registrations, updating our member CRM database, and completing other data & reporting tasks that support operations or demonstrate our impact
  • Conduct research and draft recommendations to support various initiatives
  • Participate in staff meetings and share feedback and ideas related to event planning and other projects/areas

Responsibilities may be adjusted depending on organizational needs and your specific skills and areas of interest. Additional opportunities will be discussed further with candidates who are invited to interview.

What You Will Gain

  • Hands-on experience in nonprofit communications, operations, and reporting
  • Multiple pieces to add to your professional portfolio of communications and design work
  • Support for you to initiate and complete a project that aligns with your specific areas of interest and organizational needs
  • Networking opportunities with experienced professionals and leaders of LGBTQIA+ community choirs across the Americas
  • Opportunities to make a meaningful impact in supporting local queer communities and the collective work we do to use our voices as an instrument of change

Why You Should Work With Us

  • We’re dedicated to serving the LGBTQIA+ and arts community, and actively strive to follow best practices for equity, access, and belonging in everything we do
  • We’re a fully remote team (with annual in-person events and other occasional meetings) that’s highly experienced in collaborating and developing working relationships in a majority virtual setting
  • We care a lot about the work that we do, but we also prioritize work life balance and individual wellbeing—and we also have a lot of fun!
  • Our goal is to enable you to work independently (we hate micromanaging!) by providing the training and support you need to develop skills, confidence, and initiative

What You Will Need to Thrive

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program—or have equivalent work experience—in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Nonprofit Management, Arts Administration, or similar fields
  • Strong writing and editing skills with attention to detail

  • Podcast and/or video editing experience
  • Research and/or data analytics experience
  • Experience with CRM software or database systems
  • Graphic design and/or web design experience
  • Event planning experience
  • Spanish proficiency
  • Experience or strong interest in one or more of the following: community engagement, customer service, fundraising and development, marketing, project management, knowledge organization, and/or history and archival work
