The Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at University of California San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography is seeking a motivated graduate student (Ph.D. or M.S) to join us as early as Fall 2026. Both paid and unpaid positions will be considered.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography is organized into three sections: Biology, Earth, and Oceans & Atmosphere. The Earth section encompasses research in the Cecil H. & Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) and the Geosciences Research Division (GRD). The Cecil and Ida Green IGPP is recognized internationally as an outstanding research and teaching institution in geophysics with focus on maintaining modern infrastructure for conducting research including buildings, computer networks, computing mass storage, seagoing instrumentation, communications and global observatories. Research in GRD embraces atmospheric, marine and solid earth chemistry, cosmochemistry, paleoceanography and paleoclimate, stratigraphy, geobiology and paleoecology, hydrogeology, global and regional tectonics, and paleomagnetism.
Professor Jennifer Haase’s group is seeking a graduate student to join a project focusing on GNSS radio signals, funded by a grant from the Office of Naval Research.

Jennifer Haase’s laboratory focuses on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) radio occultation research for remote sensing for climate and atmospheric science research. The student will have the opportunity to assist in development and implement new strategies for RO observations and apply them to advanced research topics in atmospheric and environmental science. Some of the ongoing projects that the candidate will be involved with include using RO observations to improve forecasting of atmospheric rivers and using RO observations to elucidate the properties of atmospheric waves for improving their representation in climate models.
Examples are forecasting challenges of moist processes where remote observations of moisture are of particular valuable, for example, in extreme storms, atmospheric rivers, tropical cyclones and tropical convection. Further examples are dynamical studies where dense temporal and spatial sampling of high vertical resolution temperature profiles are of value, for example, for studies of stratospheric processes and waves.
As a member of the team, you will develop and implement new techniques for Global Navigation Satellite System remote sensing of the atmosphere and Earth surface using lightweight instruments on range of platforms from aircraft and UAVs to balloons and satellites. You will contribute to the systems design, software implementation and data collection methods for specialized remote sensing missions. The research team develops airborne systems that use propagation delays of low elevation GNSS satellites to remotely sense the atmosphere in high impact storms over the ocean and hurricanes.
The Haase group is comprised of 9 members, including project scientists, postdocs, and graduate students. It is a lab group that values diversity, equality, inclusion.

Location: The Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics is located at the Munk Building, 8800 Biological Grade at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California. The position is in person.
Candidate Requirements
-Interest in Physics, Atmospheric Science, Climate Science, or similar.
-Familiarity with Fortran is advantageous.
