Internships at SMT offer hands-on and comprehensive experience across various departments, including Operations, Events Staff, Creative Studio, Events Technical Services and Engineering.
These learning opportunities provide exposure to technical support, event management, broadcast environments and R&D projects, equipping interns with valuable skills and industry insights.
Based on your department, you will complete SMT’s internal Certification Training program, travel to support events, contribute ideas and programming to products and work directly with teammates, managers, directors and executives.
Based on the internship, we are looking for candidates that can report to Durham, NC or Jacksonville, FL

BROADCAST OPERATIONS:
- Enhance product value through product knowledge and client communication.
- Handle data entry and cleanup of CRM tools.
- Provide excellent, client-focused customer service.
- Troubleshoot equipment and software issues.
- Support event-specific SMT products, including hardware, software, and policies.
- Assist with inventory management, systems build, and documentation.
- Participate in departmental meetings.
- Balance multiple projects to meet deadlines.
EVENTS OPERATIONS:
- Prepare equipment for event service presentation and assist with day-to-day duties in the Events Department.
- Ensure cleanliness and orderliness of the warehouse.
- Serve as an interface to clients, developing leads and representing SMT services.
- Perform risk management to minimize project issues or safety concerns.
- Participate in the loading, unloading, and inventory tracking of SMT equipment.
- Assist with warehouse duties and work SMT events based on required skill sets.
- Work weekends and holidays when necessary.
- Support event preparation and post-event wrap-up.
CREATIVE STUDIO:
- Animating assets such as graphics, logos, lower thirds, and transitions for sports media productions.
- Assisting in producing real-time graphics templates and animations for live broadcasts.
- Helping to optimize graphics for different platforms, including HD and 4K screens.
- Assisting in creating and refining production assets for live sports broadcasts, including templates, layouts, and branding materials.
- Collaborating with the creative team to ensure project files are organized, optimized, and ready for delivery.
EVENTS TECHNICAL SERVICES:
- Basic Switch Connectivity and Deployment: Set up and deploy network switches using Cisco and Netgear equipment, gaining foundational knowledge in network infrastructure.
- Wireless Network Principles: Gain foundational knowledge of wireless networks, including the deployment of bridges and mesh networks over large areas like golf courses and event sites.
- Network Cabling: Get hands-on experience with different types of fiber optic and CAT5e cables, connectors, applications, and deployment methods.
- Troubleshooting: Develop your problem-solving skills by troubleshooting issues related to physical, data link, and network layers, including common problems like bad crimps, distance limitations, and more.
- Video Streaming and Digital Signage: Gain exposure to the world of IPTV systems and LED displays, learning about IP encoding/decoding methods.
ENGINEERING:
- Performing manual, functional and regression testing of SMT base products.
- Isolating, replicating, and documenting defects and verify fixes.
- Creating product test checklists, scripts, scenarios and end-to-end test.
- Assisting with the planning, scheduling, and tracking project timelines, milestones, staff, and deliverables for assigned projects.
- Providing thorough, accurate project status reports and updates to the appropriate managers.
WHAT YOU BRING TO SMT
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Communications, Broadcast & Media, IT, Computer Science, Sports Management, Event Management, or Business.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Ability to identify, diagnose, and resolve issues.
- Excellent communication skills and a positive, tactful interaction style with staff.
- Proven ability to perform in a goal-oriented environment, handling multiple projects with minimal supervision.
- Dependent upon assignment, the ability to travel domestically and internationally if required for internship.
- Basic computer and network knowledge preferred; experience with Visual Studio, C++ programming, and data structures and algorithms is a plus (Applies to ETS, Engineering and Data Science).
- Knowledge of sports preferred.
