Educational Board Game Designer

Design educational board games that help high school students explore Utah's water systems, septic systems, and environmental stewardship.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of undergraduate students, faculty, and water professionals to design engaging educational board games.
  • Develop innovative game mechanics that make complex water and wastewater concepts accessible and enjoyable for high school students.
  • Research septic systems, water resources, and environmental topics to ensure scientific accuracy.
  • Create and refine game rules, cards, boards, and other prototype components.
  • Participate in regular brainstorming, playtesting, and iterative design sessions.
  • Incorporate feedback from educators, students, and subject matter experts to improve game play and learning outcomes.
  • Assist with preparing prototypes for classroom testing and outreach events.
  • Document design decisions and contribute to project meetings and progress updates.

Qualifications

  • Interest in board game design, educational games, or interactive learning experiences.
  • Creativity, curiosity, and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a small interdisciplinary team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and willingness to iterate based on feedback.
  • Experience with graphic design, illustration, or game prototyping is a plus, but not required.
  • Students from all majors are encouraged to apply, including engineering, education, environmental science, graphic design, computer science, and related fields.

Position Details

  • Approximately 10 hours per week beginning September 2026.
  • Work with a collaborative team of approximately four undergraduate students alongside water professionals and researchers from across Utah.
  • Primary focus is creating educational games for high school students, with potential applications for broader public audiences.
  • Opportunities may be available to participate in classroom playtesting and outreach events throughout Utah as the project progresses.

    No previous board game design experience is required. We're looking for creative, collaborative students who enjoy solving problems, learning through play, and making STEM concepts engaging for others.
