Gallery and Arts Administration Intern

The Gallery and Arts Administration Intern will assist with the daily operations of Art Works, a community art center and gallery located in Richmond, Virginia. Responsibilities include opening and closing the facility on a scheduled basis, greeting visitors, and providing information about exhibitions, artist studios, artists, and artwork.
The intern will assist with exhibit installation, hanging artwork, creating labels, catalogs, signage, and digital slideshows. Administrative duties include answering phones, sorting mail, responding to emails, receiving rental payments, and processing artwork sales.
Additional responsibilities may include preparing brochure packets, organizing marketing materials, and assisting with mailings to clients, community organizations, and prospective visitors.
This internship provides hands-on experience in gallery operations, arts administration, customer service, exhibition management, and arts marketing. The position requires 20 hours per week. Some weekend hours may be required, including occasional Saturdays or Sundays, though not every weekend. Scheduling is flexible and will be coordinated with the intern's availability.
Applicant should have the following basic skills:
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft Excel
- Canva or similar graphic design software
- Basic computer proficiency
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Customer service experience
- Organizational and time management skills
- Attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Professional phone and email etiquette
- Social media familiarity (Facebook and Instagram preferred)
- Ability to lift and hang artwork up to 25 pounds
