Position Description

The Facilities Support Staff EDGE Intern assists the Facilities Department with building, grounds, inventory, and administrative support functions that contribute to the safe and efficient operation of the Converse campus. This position provides hands-on experience in facilities operations, maintenance support, asset management, inventory systems, workplace organization, and skilled trades exposure.

Through direct participation in day-to-day facilities activities, interns gain practical experience working with maintenance staff, equipment, inventory systems, and campus infrastructure while developing transferable skills in communication, problem-solving, organization, and project support.

Key Responsibilities

Facilities Operations & Maintenance Support

  • Assist with general building and grounds maintenance activities, including painting, cleaning, sweeping, vacuuming, debris removal, landscaping, and other support functions.
  • Support campus upkeep through routine maintenance tasks that contribute to safe and functional facilities.
  • Operate hand tools and small power tools under appropriate supervision and training.

Inventory & Asset Management

  • Assist with inventory and asset management activities, including tagging, tracking, monitoring, organizing, and maintaining records.
  • Organize tools, supplies, equipment, parts, plans, and facilities documentation.
  • Support efforts to maintain accurate equipment and asset inventories.

Administrative & Technology Support

  • Utilize Excel, Asset Essentials, and other software systems to enter, update, and maintain records.
  • Assist with data entry, record organization, cost tracking, and administrative support activities.
  • Support department projects related to equipment inventories, facilities documentation, and operational organization.

Experiential Learning Opportunities

EDGE Interns gain hands-on experience in facilities operations, maintenance support, asset management, inventory systems, workplace organization, and campus infrastructure.

Depending on departmental needs and student interests, interns may gain experience with administrative processes, facilities technologies, maintenance operations, equipment management, and skilled trades support activities.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled Converse University student in good academic standing.
  • General computer skills, including email, typing, and Microsoft Office.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to work independently and follow directions.

Preferred Interests & Experience

Experience with painting, carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, landscaping, mechanical work, HVAC systems, farming, or equipment operation preferred but not required.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and carry 30–50 pounds.
  • Ability to safely climb stairs and ladders.
  • Participation in event setup and breakdown activities.
  • Work performed in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Supervision, Mentorship & Evaluation

EDGE Interns receive ongoing coaching, mentorship, and feedback throughout the academic year. Interns work closely with Facilities staff members who provide daily guidance, skill development, and performance feedback related to assigned responsibilities.

As part of the Converse EDGE Internship Program, interns participate in a structured assessment process designed to measure growth in career readiness competencies and professional development.

  • Schedule: Determined in coordination with the supervisor
  • Positions will remain open until filled. Hiring timelines vary by department, and some supervisors may move more quickly through the interview and selection process than others. Early application is encouraged.
