Undergraduate Research Assistant (Ambient Intelligence for Older Adult Care Study)

This study, titled “Ambient Intelligence for Older Adult Care,” aims to improve the quality of life and care for older adults using sensor technology and advanced data analytics. Over a four-year period, the study implements wearable and home-installed sensors to continuously monitor participants’ physical and cognitive health in their living environments. Data is collected through baseline assessments, daily journals, weekly surveys, and follow-up surveys, helping researchers develop techniques for health monitoring, fall prevention, and stress management. The study is centered at Stanford University and involves direct collaboration with participants residing in an independent living facility.

This position provides hands-on research experience in a cutting-edge study leveraging sensor technology and AI to support older adult care. It’s ideal for students interested in healthcare innovation, aging populations, and applying engineering or behavioral science in real-world settings. You’ll gain exposure to participant interaction, data collection, and interdisciplinary teamwork—skills especially valuable for students considering graduate study or careers in healthcare, technology, psychology, or social sciences.

Typical Responsibilities:

• Assist with deployment, installation, and de-installation of sensors in participant homes (includes setup and troubleshooting).
• Collect baseline and follow-up participant data through surveys, interviews, and assessments
• Support daily and weekly survey administration, data entry, and review
• Attend onsite check-ins with participants to ensure sensor functioning and participant engagement
• Participate in recruitment activities, presentations, and communication with older adults
• Manage and maintain study records, materials, and logs
• Support the research team with data organization
• Adhere to participant privacy and ethical guidelines in handling data and interactions

Desired Qualifications:

• Undergraduate student, preferably studying psychology, medicine, gerontology, or related fields
• Interested in aging, healthcare technology, and real-world research implementation
• Strong interpersonal skills; enthusiastic about interacting with older adults
• Reliable, organized, and able to work both independently and collaboratively
• Basic technical proficiency (familiarity with sensors, wearables, or survey tools is a plus)
• Interest in developing data collection, analysis, and field research skills
