Job Description:
Under the direction of the High School Principal, the Assistant Principal handles discipline and attendance for a portion of the student body, evaluates teachers as assigned each year, supervises curriculum, staff, budget, and monitors student events and extra-curricular activities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage student discipline
- Manage student and teacher attendance
- Supervise staff within the guidelines of the collective-bargaining agreements
- Evaluate staff and provide feedback
- Manage budgets
- Lead and manage curriculum
- Supervise student organizations
- Supervise physical plant and grounds
- Supervise co-curricular and athletic activities
- Provide organizational support for scheduling building activities and updating handbooks
- Participate in site and district policy making
- Supervise placement of intern and substitute teachers and monitor their performance
- Performs other human resources duties as assigned
- Regular and consistent attendance
- Must have knowledge of and comply with the policies and procedures contained in the Portage Public Employee Schools Handbook

Qualifications:
- High-quality leadership experience in secondary education
- Established track record of working collaboratively, effectively, and flexibly as a member of a team
- Positive and productive attitude while working in stressful situations
- Ability to deal thoughtfully, fairly and consistently with students and colleagues, community members and parents, defusing difficult situation as needed
- Ability to initiate and be depended on to follow through with all responsibilities with great attention to detail
- Ability to work with student-information systems and other data sources
- Dedication to creating and maintaining a healthy school culture and to supporting and improving both teaching and learning
- Successful experience in team building, relationship building, curriculum and instructional leadership, staff mentoring and program development
- Ability to effectively coach and evaluate professional abilities and skills and be part of critical staffing decisions
- Ability to collaborate with staff to guide them in professional growth
- Strong skills in: listening, communicating, collaborating, problem solving and organizing
- Uses appropriate ethics and good judgment in both professional and public spheres
- Intense work ethic and dedication to work to accomplish the goals and tasks that the team decides together
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to execute administrative responsibilities including evenings, weekends and summers
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Valid Michigan Administrator Certification for Secondary Education, or the ability to obtain an administrator permit with MDE for PPS and the appropriate certification within 3 years.
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate.
- Minimum of five years successful secondary teaching experience.
- Experience in a leadership role in education.
- Bachelor’s degree in Education.
- Master's degree in Educational Leadership preferred.
