Journalism / Newspaper Counselor at Legendary Maine Summer Camp (PAID INTERNSHIP)

Spend the summer teaching Newspaper Journalism at Summer Camp!

Camp Winnebago, a traditional boys summer camp in Maine, is hiring a Newspaper Counselor to run our Newspaper program for boys ages 8–15. This is a hands-on, creative role for a person who likes working with young people and would love to create a twice-weekly Winnebago Evening Gazette two-pager with campers of all ages.

It's just about the most endearing, fun, and quintessential job at summer camp - leading a small army of camper-journalists as you teach them about leads, body, topics, headlines, and quotes. This all happens while you are also producing a document (the Gazette) that makes its way back to parents, onto the camp website, and becomes a irresistible archive of the summer at Camp Winnebago.

What You’ll Do

Teach journalism / newspaper fundamentals to campers

Instruct campers in reporting techniques (developing story, sourcing quotes, writing up content)

Design fun, age-appropriate newspaper focuses and editions

Supervise and maintain a safe, organized newspaper room

Encourage creativity, patience, and pride in finished work

Who This Is Great For

Journalism majors, composition majors, English, writing or related majors

Students or recent grads with journalism experience

People interested in teaching or youth work

Anyone who loves analog newspapers and working with kids

(Teaching experience not required — passion and patience matter most.)

What We Provide

✔ Salary for the summer
✔ Room & board included
✔ Travel to and from MAINE covered
✔ Days off throughout the summer

Why Camp Winnebago

You’ll gain real teaching experience, build leadership skills, create meaningful connections, and spend the summer immersed in the journalism of camp life. It's somewhere between Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom and the New York Times. Closer to Moonrise.
