Position Title: 1:1 Special Education (SpEd) Support Staff
Program: Grattan After School Program (GASP)
Status: Part-Time
Schedule: Approximately 21.5 hours per week
Reports To: Executive Director or Designated Supervisor
Hourly Rate: $35.00–$38.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience
Position Summary
The 1:1 Special Education (SpEd) Support Staff provides direct supervision, individualized support, and inclusive programming assistance for an assigned child or children during the Grattan After School Program. This role is dedicated to facilitating students successfully participate in enrichment, recreation, and social-emotional activities while ensuring their safety, well-being, and positive engagement within the program community.
The ideal candidate is patient, compassionate, flexible, and committed to supporting children with diverse learning, behavioral, developmental, and social-emotional needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Student Support
- Provide consistent one-on-one supervision and support to an assigned child or children throughout the afterschool program.
- Maintain close proximity and uninterrupted line of sight during all program activities and transitions.
- Assist students in participating fully and meaningfully in enrichment, recreational, academic, and social activities.
- Support the development of social skills, self-advocacy, independence, and positive peer relationships.
- Implement behavior support strategies as directed by program leadership and educational teams.
Social-Emotional and Behavioral Support
- Support students with self-regulation and emotional management.
- Utilize de-escalation strategies to help students navigate challenging situations safely and respectfully.
- Reinforce social-emotional learning practices and positive behavior expectations.
- Maintain a calm, supportive, and trauma-informed approach when responding to student needs.
Personal Care and Safety
- Assist with personal care needs, including toileting support, hygiene assistance, and other age-appropriate care as required.
- Monitor student safety at all times during indoor and outdoor activities.
- Follow all program policies regarding health, safety, confidentiality, and child supervision.
Communication and Collaboration
- Maintain positive and professional communication with families, school-day staff, and afterschool team members.
- Share relevant observations regarding student participation, behavior, and progress with supervisors.
- Collaborate with program staff to create inclusive and supportive environments for all participants.
- Attend staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities as required.
Program Support
- Assist with activity preparation, setup, cleanup, and general program operations.
- Support staff in maintaining organized, safe, and welcoming program spaces.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by program leadership.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience working with children in educational, recreational, childcare, or youth development settings.
- Ability to work collaboratively with children, families, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm and supportive during challenging situations.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of supervising active children in indoor and outdoor settings.
Preferred
- Experience working with children with disabilities, special needs, or behavioral support plans.
- Knowledge of inclusive practices, behavior support strategies, and social-emotional learning.
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Safety Care, or comparable nonviolent crisis prevention and de-escalation training.
Physical Requirements
- Physical ability to maintain active supervision during indoor and outdoor activities, including standing, walking, bending, navigating stairs and responding promptly to ensure student safety at all times.
- Ability to lift fifty pounds, move, or assist children and equipment as necessary for program operations and student support.
Employment Requirements
Employment is contingent upon:
- Successful completion of a background check.
- Submission of a negative Tuberculosis (TB) test result.
- Completion of all required hiring paperwork, including Form I-9 verification and employment eligibility documentation.
- Compliance with all Grattan After School Program policies and procedures.
