Position Overview
The After-School Assistant helps create a safe, nurturing, and structured after-school environment. Responsibilities include supporting supervision, implementing indoor and outdoor activities, assisting with snack time, transitions, and individualized learning support as needed, and upholding Montessori-informed practices and school policies.
The After-School Assistant supports programming across age groups served by West Side Montessori, including:
- Little House (Infant/Toddler)
- Children’s House (Pre-K, Kindergarten)
- Elementary/Middle School (Grades 1–8)
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain attentive supervision of children during indoor and outdoor activities.
- Report any health, safety, or welfare concerns to designated staff promptly.
- Plan and assist with age-appropriate activities.
- Support independent work, small-group activities, and cooperative projects.
- Provide gentle instruction or modeling of Montessori routines and materials as directed.
- Encourage language development, social-emotional growth, and collaborative play
- Adapt activities to suit infants/toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary/middle school students as appropriate.
- Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and inviting learning environment.
- Collaborate with other after-school staff to ensure a cohesive program.
- Aid with attendance, sign-in/out processes, and basic record-keeping.
- Participate in staff meetings or planning sessions when required.
Desired Qualifications
- Minimum 18 years of age; high school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in education, child development, or related field preferred.
- Demonstrated interest or experience with early childhood/elementary settings.
- Commitment to child safety, respectful communication, and inclusive practices.
- Ability to multitask, remain patient, and adapt to a dynamic after-school environment.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
- Positive behavior management and conflict resolution abilities
- Basic nutrition/kitchen hygiene awareness for snack support
- Dependability, punctuality, and professional demeanor
Physical and Working Conditions
- Ability to actively supervise children in indoor spaces and outdoor play areas.
- Ability to bend, reach, and assist with lifting or carrying light equipment/materials.
- This role involves exposure to a variety of classroom and outdoor environments.
