Mentoring Program Intern
VCU Office of Alumni Relations leads the management of VCU Link, an online platform that connects students, alumni, and friends of VCU for career advice, industry contacts and meaningful professional relationships. Within the VCU Link platform, the BAC Mentoring Circle program, initiated, sponsored and supported by the VCU Alumni Black Alumni Council connects current students with alumni mentors for one year, to promote and contribute to the recruitment and retention of students.

The team operates on a hybrid work model, so you can expect to interact with us in person and through technology including Zoom, phone, email, digital platforms, and project management software.
The Mentoring Program Intern will work directly on the Alumni Career & Personal Development team under the supervision of the Sr. Director of Alumni Career & Personal Development to support the VCU Link platform and the BAC Mentoring Circle program. The Mentoring Circle program focuses on mentor/mentee matching, paired engagement and goal setting along with community building and events.
- VCU Link responsibilities:
- Promote VCU Link throughout the academic year and at key touch points during Weeks of Welcome, orientation, alumni events, resource fairs, career fairs etc. (we ask for you to be available and flexible for these events throughout the year)
- Review and research resources and training materials on topics such as but not limited to workplace professionalism, mentee professionalism, resume, interviewing, job search materials for platform users
- Assist with the set-up and staffing of VCU Link events such as but not limited to VCU Link fest during Weeks of Welcome
- Keep platform content current by updating announcements, events, and resources regularly
- Mentoring Circle responsibilities:
- Support event logistics for fall and spring programming, including Rams Relax and Recharge and the Mocktail Networking Mixer, by assisting with communications, RSVP tracking, setup, and on-site staffing
- Conduct periodic outreach and check-ins with mentor/mentee pairs during the matching period
- Flag pairs or users showing low engagement so staff can follow up in a timely way
- Post and monitor the VCU Link discussion board and flag items needing staff attention
- Support data collection and reporting from the VCU Link platform for the Mentoring Circle
Anticipated hours/week
- Hours of work are flexible between 9:00 am and 5:00pm, Monday through Friday; The schedule will include standard work day hours and allow for hybrid working. There is an expectation to work in-person at the VCU Office of Alumni Relations, 111 N. 4th Street, half of your work hours.
- 10 hours a week
Minimum & Preferred Qualifications
Applicants for the position should possess the following criteria to be considered for employment:
- Experience with Google Sheets and Docs
- Ability to learn and use project management software, alumni databases, and digital platforms
- Positive, outgoing, and professional demeanor with strong communication skills while representing the VCU Office of Alumni Relations
- Highest standards of integrity, dependability, and punctuality
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with evolving responsibilities
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks
- Excellent interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills
- Prior experience supporting programs or events is a plus
- Prior experience as a participant in a mentoring program is a plus
The Mentoring Program Intern will work alongside a team of professionals on campus. This position will report to Latisha Smart, Senior Director, Alumni Career and Personal Development.
This internship is part of the Transforming FWS Internship Program and has been approved as a REAL Level 3 Experience, meaning your successful completion of this experience in 2026–2027 will satisfy your REAL graduation requirement. As part of this experience, you must:
- work at least five hours per week (hands-on learning) in your role;
- engage in six monthly mentoring sessions facilitated by your supervisor-mentor;
- engage in three reflection activities facilitated by your supervisor-mentor; and
- complete a pre-, mid-, and post-internship survey.
You must be planning to be a full-time student in Fall 2026 and Spring 2027, as interns will work for the full academic year (Aug/Sept through Apr/May).
