Internship Title:  Healthcare Administration and Clinical Operations Intern

Internship and Organization Description:  

Rapha Medical Center is a community-based healthcare organization located in Charlottesville, Virginia, dedicated to providing compassionate, patient-centered, and evidence-based medical care. Our organization focuses on whole-person wellness by addressing patients' physical, emotional, and mental health needs. Rapha Medical Center offers a wide range of services, including urgent care, family medicine, telemedicine, psychiatry, vein wellness, and post-acute care, serving individuals and families across all stages of life. As an internship site, Rapha Medical Center provides students with exposure to a multidisciplinary healthcare environment where they can learn from experienced physicians, nurse practitioners, behavioral health providers, and administrative professionals. Interns gain valuable hands-on experience in patient care operations, healthcare administration, clinical documentation, and community health initiatives while contributing to the organization's mission of delivering accessible, high-quality healthcare with compassion, integrity, and excellence.

The Healthcare Administration and Clinical Operations Intern will support the daily functions of Rapha Medical Center while gaining practical experience in healthcare delivery, patient services, and medical office operations. This internship is designed for students interested in healthcare administration, public health, nursing, pre-medical studies, health sciences, or related fields.

Duties:  

  • Observe multidisciplinary care delivery across specialties, including urgent care and telehealth
  • Participate in team meetings, case and interdisciplinary care discussions - where appropriate - and in team coordination activities
  • Learn healthcare compliance standards (HIPAA, documentation accuracy, patient privacy)
  • Prepare and process specialty referrals (e.g., endocrinology, podiatry, neurology, general surgery)
  • Assist providers with patient intake, registration, scheduling, appointment coordination, vital signs documentation, and chart preparation
  • Support care coordination for chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes management, hypertension follow-ups)
  • Observe and assist with telehealth visit workflow and patient readiness
  • Support clinical and administrative staff with medical records management and documentation processes.
  • Assist with quality improvement projects, patient education materials, and community outreach initiatives.
  • Support insurance verification, referral coordination, and patient communication activities.
  • Complete special projects related to healthcare administration, patient satisfaction, and operational efficiency.

Qualifications:  

  • Interest in learning about healthcare operations, patient care services and coordination, community health services, and medical administration
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Basic computer skills and willingness to learn electronic health record (EHR) systems
  • Current undergraduate student pursuing a degree in healthcare administration, public health, nursing, pre-medicine, health sciences, business administration, or a related field.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and compliance with HIPAA standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and basic computer skills.

For this internship, what level of experience is needed?  

  • No prior clinical experience required; training will be provided

Schedule:  

Mostly traditional weekday hours, with some weekend hours that may include Sat 8-8 and Sun 12-8. Specific hours can be mutually determined by student and supervisor.  This employer offers flexible scheduling.
