The Opportunity

We are seeking an exceptional PhD-level technical professional to serve as a part-time Technical Lead for our growing portfolio of AI and engineering client projects. This is a rare blend of hands-on technical work, team leadership, and client-facing consulting — ideal for a doctoral student or recent PhD who thrives on solving complex problems and wants meaningful industry experience alongside their academic work.

You will serve as the technical authority on our project teams, partnering directly with our full-time Project Manager to ensure every deliverable exceeds client expectations.

What You’ll Do

  • Own the technical roadmap: translate client requirements into clear, actionable engineering tasks for the team
  • Unblock team members by providing architectural guidance, code reviews, and hands-on problem solving
  • Review and approve all technical deliverables before they reach the client, ensuring quality and accuracy
  • Collaborate closely with the Project Manager to track progress, manage timelines, and surface risks early
  • Contribute directly to AI system design, implementation, and iteration on active client projects
  • Serve as an internal technical resource and mentor for junior team members
  • Participate in client touchpoints as the technical subject matter expert when needed

What We’re Looking For

Required:

  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed a PhD program (any field with strong technical / AI focus)
  • Deep hands-on experience building AI and/or machine learning systems (beyond coursework — real projects)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead or coordinate a technical team, whether in research, industry, or open source
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals (Python and/or other relevant languages)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication — able to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders
  • Highly organized, self-directed, and able to manage priorities across multiple workstreams


 

Preferred:

  • Experience with LLMs, generative AI, RAG pipelines, or AI agents
  • Background in enterprise software, cloud infrastructure, or data engineering
  • Prior consulting, client services, or product management experience
  • Familiarity with Agile / sprint-based delivery workflows

Engagement Details

  • Commitment: 12–15 hours per week (flexible, remote-first)
  • Contract duration: up to 12 months, renewable
  • Compensation: $40–$50 per hour, based on experience
  • Start date: early July 2026 (immediate need)
  • Work style: asynchronous-friendly with regular syncs with the Project Manager
