Job Summary
The NYC Digital Service is seeking a Senior UX Researcher and Designer to support the design and improvement of public-facing digital services across New York City agencies.
This role ensures that NYC services are user-centered, data-driven, and aligned with the real needs of New Yorkers. The selected candidate will lead research and design efforts, working closely with product managers, designers, strategists, and data analysts to create seamless and accessible digital experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end UX research for high-priority public service initiatives.
- Conduct generative and evaluative research (interviews, field studies, usability testing, A/B testing).
- Develop research plans, hypotheses, and user requirements in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
- Synthesize qualitative and quantitative data to generate actionable insights.
- Collaborate with analytics teams to interpret behavioral data and user research findings.
- Design and wireframe user journeys based on research insights and business requirements.
- Document and present research findings clearly for stakeholders and leadership.
- Improve and expand internal UX research tools, methods, and frameworks.
- Promote user-centered design practices across departments.
Mandatory Skills & Experience
- Minimum 8+ years of UX Research and Design experience.
- Strong expertise in both generative and evaluative research methods.
- Experience creating user journey wireframes based on research insights.
- Ability to develop research plans and translate hypotheses into actionable studies.
- Experience recruiting users based on demographic and behavioral criteria.
- Strong understanding of research validity, bias prevention, and statistical reasoning.
- Ability to promote user-centered, evidence-based design culture across teams.
Preferred / Desirable Skills
- Certification in evaluation practice (e.g., TEI) or equivalent research education.
- 10+ years of experience analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.
- Strong understanding of statistical principles for data interpretation.
- Experience working in cross-functional teams (product, engineering, data).
- Experience facilitating synthesis workshops with stakeholders.
- Strong focus on accessibility and inclusive design practices.
