MHI Compensation: This position is eligible for the MHI $1000 Scholarship. Students who receive an offer for this position will be required to enroll in the Mellon Humanities Internship course to receive the $1000 scholarship disbursement. As referenced in the Student Interest Form that you filled out to sign up for participation in MHI, this scholarship can impact, or be impacted by, other financial aid you receive. 

If an internship requires out of pocket costs, students may apply for reimbursement for expenses including background checks, qualifying travel, or equipment. All applications will be reviewed and processed for eligibility. Please contact your departments internship coordinator for more details.

The $1000 scholarship offered for this position is intended to provide financial assistance for the pursuit of your education; it is not compensation for the performance of any services and does not create an employment relationship between the you and the Site.

This position is an experiential learning opportunity and receipt of the scholarship is tied to an academic course (IDS 3947). If you do not complete your registration for the course in a timely manner, your internship offer may be withdrawn, and your department’s Internship Coordinator may notify the host organization that the position has reopened.

Job Description:                                                                                                      

The Skills Center is a sports-based youth development organization. We promote sports intentionally infused with life skills and academics. We pursue a purposeful development of young minds from ages 3 to 24. Our55,000 sq. ft. Youth Development facility features intentional programming and initiatives for youth within the Tampa Bay region that uses the power of sports to create academic and leadership success for young people. 

The Skills Center is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Operations & Engagement Intern to support the day-to-day operational flow of the facility and enhance overall customer experience. This internship provides hands-on exposure to facility operations, systems management, and community engagement within a youth development environment.

The intern will work closely with the Director of Operations & Engagement to assist in improving front desk operations, supporting data tracking initiatives, and enhancing internal systems and processes. This role is ideal for individuals interested in operations management, systems organization, and organizational efficiency within a nonprofit setting.

Responsibilities:

• Assess current methods for tracking attendance and visitor data within the facility and develop a comprehensive plan (or recommendations) to improve current methods.

• Assist with participant check-in and registration processes to support daily front desk operations

• Support front desk activities by handling inquiries and ensuring a positive visitor experience

• Assist in improving methods for tracking attendance and visitor data within the facility

• Support the development and implementation of practical data collection processes

• Assist in documenting internal systems such as Active and Scoreboard to improve staff accessibility

• Help create simple user guides and reference materials for operational platforms

• Assist in organizing workflows related to events, registrations, and facility coordination

• Support communication channels (front desk, phone, email) to enhance overall customer experience

Qualifications:

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

• Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills

• Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively

• Interest in operations, systems management, or nonprofit work
