Academic Coach (Part-Time)

Location: San Diego County, CA (On-Site)

Service Areas: SD North County (San Marcos area preferred), Clairemont, North Park, Paradise Hills, and La Mesa

Pay: $20–24/hour

About The Ed Ladder

The Ed Ladder is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting underserved learners through personalized academic coaching, mentorship, and educational services throughout San Diego County. We believe every student deserves a clear path forward and a trusted guide to help them navigate it.

Our Academic Coaches do more than tutor - they build meaningful relationships with students, helping them develop confidence, strengthen academic skills, and achieve their goals both in and out of the classroom.

About the Role

As an Academic Coach, you will work directly with 6th–12th grade students through one-on-one and small-group sessions. You'll support students academically while also serving as a mentor and positive role model.

This role is ideal for college students, recent graduates, and aspiring professionals in education, counseling, psychology, social work, youth development, and nonprofit leadership who are seeking meaningful, hands-on professional experience while making a direct impact in their community.

Training and ongoing support are provided.

What You'll Do

  • Provide individualized academic support in core middle and high school subjects
  • Help students develop organization, study, and time-management skills
  • Build positive mentoring relationships that encourage student growth
  • Support students in setting and achieving academic goals
  • Monitor student progress and communicate updates to program staff
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment
  • Collaborate with fellow coaches and staff to improve student outcomes

Qualifications

Required

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Reliable transportation and ability to work within assigned service areas
  • Comfort supporting students in common middle and high school subjects
  • Commitment to educational equity and serving diverse communities
  • Professionalism, reliability, and strong organizational skills

Preferred

  • Previous tutoring, mentoring, teaching, childcare, or youth development experience
  • Coursework or background in STEM, education or a related field
  • Experience working with 6-12 students

Schedule

  • Part-time (approximately 18 hours per week)
  • Flexible scheduling based on student assignments and availability
  • Primarily after-school hours
